i read the version in the OP, was pretty good and just a few typos.

but seriously it seemed kinda retarded and unrealistic how noboru and his gang behaved. was mishima poking fun of pretentious hobby philosophers here or were they some kind of self insert?

i know there are fucked up edgelord kids but i think every author does something for a reason and i did not understand why mishima made 13 year old boys talk like this and it took me out of it every time it happened. it didn't make any sense to me but i assume he did this on purpose

Are you this stupid, really? The boys want to be adults, like many children, that's why they imitate their dream image of adult for example in the way they speak. Behavior of the sailor, who they imagined as cruel macho adventurer, shatters their illusion. That's why they kill him, becouse it reminds them they do not live in reality, but in illusion.

>> No.15938606

At first I thought the kids are the stupid ones and the sailor shows the wisdom of coming age. Then I read about the author and I am not so sure anymore.

>Are you this stupid, really?
probably
>The boys want to be adults
then why do they always repeat their disdain for them?
>Behavior of the sailor, who they imagined as cruel macho adventurer, shatters their illusion.
i got that
>That's why they kill him, becouse it reminds them they do not live in reality, but in illusion.
i thought it was because they wanted to retain some of his 'glory' as a sailor, that's why he should wear his sailors uniform, but your explanation sounds better.

but i've also read that the boys are some sort of self insert of mishima as the sailor clearly stands for old japan and noboru's mother for a westernized japan and the boys/mishima want the sailor/japan to stay as is. if that were the case, why would he make noboru and his gang so unlikeable, so pseudo-intellectual? either mishima himself or this interpretation are retarded

>> No.15938920

just finished this, came to /lit/ to post a thread
>>15938297
They dont want to be adults, didnt the leader say how when theyre older theyll just turn into fathers and be despicable like their fathers? comparing to the sea of fertility and his suicide, it seems like mishima really believes that the world of post-war japan is empty and unaesthetic because the people have given up manliness and glory and softened in the imposed new american system. so Ryuji definitely lives in an illusion but the kids fail to see through the illusion even though they think they do. The proper way to deal with the reality of the ugly world would be Isao from Runaway Horses, who embodies the old samurai spirit and chooses to die in an attack against the new modernity

You said it. The boy is son of the mother, who represents westernized japan, but he idolises the old Japan. He is hypocrite. Similar to Kaczynski fans on /lit/, they despise texhnology, yet weren't it for it they wouldn't meet.

You unironically should read it. Mishima has a wonderful prowess at the use of romantic language. When you read it, it feels more weird and disturbing then try hard edgy, which contrasts well with the romantic language.

The book is a metaphor with Mishima as the kid, the sailor as old Japan, and the kid's mom as new Japan.

>> No.15941399

>>15940949
but why does mishima use such an asshole as his self insert? i asked this multiple times now and it still doesn't make any sense. i get that you want to try to be a bit neutral but noboru and his gang are deranged, psychopathic tryhards

>> No.15941613

>>15941399
not him, but i think its because noburo isnt supposed to be correct, or the good guy. he's the crude formulation of conceitedness and anger towards a legitimate target which is why he's a young kid. I seriously doubt noburo is a full-on self insert, but is probably based on his younger self with disgust at the modern Japan that is poorly formulated, but becomes 'perfected' in mishimas later characters like Isao

yeah, thats literally the point. just because he thinks he does doesnt mean he does. in fact that line basically is telling you noburo is not the author. if he was a simple self insert he wouldnt "think" he knew everything

Golden Temple is kind of similar, written after he watched the trial of the dude that actually burned the temple and tried to capture his motivations. Sea of Fertility tetrology is great though, especially the first 2 books. I'd start there, with Spring Snow

A lot of flaws but you'll remember the modern aesthetic focusing on the masculine and its different forms in post-ww2 japan. Creates a very unique feeling.

It’s the woodblock printing techniques that produced pretty much every kind of Japanese art that’s known in the west. Even cheap cover art imitating it will look good to most people, which is pretty nice.
