I think it represents his dual psyche, and the horse the old lady. On one hand he is the little boy crying for the poor old abused horse, but on the other he's the guy whipping and beating it to death, reflecting his view of humanity.

In Russia we have a special name for hair color that lies between blonde and dark hair. It is "pycый"(google that word to see what it looks like)
