I believe this to be one of the greatest horror stories ever, if not one of the greatest stories ever written.

Got half way through, and stopped.
And keep in mind, I've read a number of Stephen Kings and thoroughly enjoyed them.
And plus, this wasn't even scary.
But none of Stephen King's books are scary.
It's hard for literature to be scary IMO.
Only time I've been scared whilst reading was long dark nights on /x/.
