"The Rise of American Civilization" by Charles and Mary Beard (not the BBC Mary Beard). Granted I haven't read that many, but this is a classic that used to be a college textbook, but the Beard's were critical of American patriotism throughout its history, including upon entry to WW2, so they kind of fell out of favor. That criticism suits my disposition.

It benefits from supplementary reading, so you may want to keep a search engine on hand whilst going through it.

The Anti-Federalists are pretty important. Basically all the Amendments people like in the Constitution are there because of them. I think everyone is worth reading a bit of, though. It's only way to craft a coherent worldview. You find yourself disagreeing with "experts" whom you used to defer to when you expand your well of knowledge.

I wholly agree, but my backlog's endless, and it can be tough winnowing my way through. On the note of amendments, though, are you aware of any book(s) narrowly focusing on the development/history of the Constitution, and the post-revolution process of transitioning away from British common law? That'd probably grab me good right now. To my understanding we largely kept English law as a macrosystem after splitting off from England, probably partly because most of the Founding Fathers were lawyers, and just from the onerousness of pulling out a whole new system of law out from a hat, from thin air. But inevitably, divergences have developed, as is obvious now. Curious how that panned out thru the 1800s.

Stacking is really bad for the books below, they spine will get fucked after a while, plus it doesn't really generate more space, as they already fill it in the most efficient way possible.

But I guess, I'll donate the bottom shelf of the second bookcase for the most part as it's mostly random stuff and gifts no longer relevant.

Yeah, it seems more rewarding to me in some way. I have quite a big film collection as well (over 500 DVDs/blu-rays) and a few months ago I realised that I had put a couple dozen films in the shelf over the years without having seen them. It was great to finally watch them all. Moreover, when I have read/watched every single piece in the shelf, I know which I like and which I don't and can easily sell those I didn't enjoy as much to the used books store to make way for new books. This way, the shelf gets curated over the years. Ideally I'd have room for a hundred more books, but that isn't the case in my apartment right now (especially considering how much room the films and my Donald Duck comics take) .
