How is reading different from consooming?

>> No.15860680

they are the same in principle, only, with books, you have a much higher likelihood of getting something far too complex to "consume" in it's entirety without expending some mental energy.

it's like working out: buying weights, gym memberships and protein is consooming, but if you use it all to improve yourself it's not really exhibiting the problem associated with consooming

No you're right, everything is consumption. What matters is the quality of what you consume.

If you buy and read exclusively fiction, it's not really. Though, it's said to reduce risk of mental disorders in later life.

they are both consuming, but the literature this board is interested in is generally informative and is made to provoke critical thought while consumer items are designed to maximize profits and appeal to the easily accessible desires for pleasure and comfort in order to do so. Tons of feel-good books are made in that same light, this is why the self-help and erotica genres exist. But most classical literature requires discipline and a conscious denial of instant gratification to get into and is more challenging than instinctually attractive, which is why it remains largely unread. Well if you are reading halfwit fictional nonsense like hairy potter or lord of the rings sure its consooming, but a proper non fictional book depending on its level, it will exercise your mind and also improve your comprehension skills and vocabulary whereas sitting there like the brainlet you with your mouth hanging open while you watch tv does nothing for you.

is there some meta-narrative that explains the "mouth agape, false surprise" phenomenon?
its almost like the duck face for women, except i also dont know why the duck face became such a thing.
and for some reason, i find the "mouth open" version much more dislikeable. although that is perhaps because its users tend to be of a certain, dislikeable type.

Recently lost my best friend to the consoomer meme.

He's the epitome of "geek culture", 30 years old, pretty smart dude, spend his time consooming series, movies, comics, and various merchs. Told me he was doing it to "empty his head", asked him what he did to fill it, he didn't like it one bit.

The thread OP, despite seeming like bait, is actually on to something.
On one hand I feel like you should unapologetically like something. I'm a dirty weeb, and that is that.
On the other hand, there are clearly hobbies and activities that are more "valuable" or "worthwhile." Reading, cooking, and lifting weights are the common ones usually touted as "good" hobbies. But why?
I subconsciously feel this way, but I can't quite explain why.
Here are some more examples of what seems to be contradictions
>consooming movies bad
>but Casablanca good
>consooming Harry Potter bad
>but Faulkner good
>consooming Big Bang Theory bad
>but The Wire good
>consooming Oreimo bad
>but Tatami Galaxy good

Depends on what you read. Copypasting hot takes from pseuds will just make you another one. If you read properly you gain knowledge and you grow as a being.
>cooking,

> and lifting weights
Lifting weights is worse punishment than Auschwitz but it does make you healthier. Can't get by in life without the waste of time tax.

Tbh why should I care if someone is reading HP or watching a stupid movie from 50-60 years ago? Both are neither good nor bad. Like if someone is reading HP once in a while or watching hentai once in a while why should that matter? The problem is if it's 12 hours a day gaming/reading/cooking anything really. All is a form of escapism.

Its youtuber face, thats where it originated and where it had a real marketable value. Its display of a high degree of emotion to signal something interesting is ongoing which should attract viewers attention.

Its also signal of self-consciousness and loud personality as opposed to shy and quiet which would normally be associated with these types.

you can change yourself and become a better human by reading books that challenge you or confront your perception of reality, yourself and society. Most consumer media is intentionally engineered to be non-confrontational and easily consumable without any prerequisites to reach and please the widest possible audience. Also Old > new doesn't hold up here since reading cheap romance novels from the 19th century like Molly Bloom isn't gonna do shit other than fulfilling your personal fantasies and wishes.
