I need to give DonQ another shot. I wasnt in the right frame of mind when I was reading it and never finished. Also, the Very Bad Wizards podcast just did a segment on Borges' "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote" its worth a listen, pretty funny and informative.

I'm reading it right now. I'm in the Dorotea chapter.

compared to Don Quixote?Hell no.
There are only 3 chivalry books that Cervantes considered good enough (inspirational even) not to be burned in DQ: Amadís de Gaula, Tirant lo Blanc and Palmerín de Inglaterra. DQ is genius work because it is a satire made with love and understanding for the genre,as a turning point in literature and Spanish as a language, the high note of the golden century.

>> No.15854898

>>15854862
The thing about this old spanish chivelry texts is that they are fucking hard to read "raw". This Rocinante stuff is made by cervantistas with footnotes and stuff to contextualize and "translate" medieval formats to an intelligible format.

>> No.15854928

>>15854816
Since Handke won the Nobel last year I started noticing a peak in DQ interest, because of Sierra de Gredos. Calvino also speaks in extense about DQ. Give it a try, read some stuff about the Matters (Britain, France and even Rome) to get in the mood for it. I can guarantee you will have a good time

>> No.15854985

>>15854898
how does one even get into studying old spanish texts anyway?
there's always some giant asspulls people seem to track down from with such precision i'm wondering if this world might not be cluttered with literary geniuses that simply didn't give writing a shot
do they start with the greeks?

Well, they are medievalists, it is their job to excavate the literary culture of the period. They are well-fed and well paid, specially in Spain, where naturally "estudios cervantinos" are strong as fuck. Besides, some of those books were very popular, retellings of other Matters, kept by royal family and so on. Pic related is a copy of a story written in 1414 about Lancelot du Lac.

Wait you mean there was actually a career in humanities that didn't necessarily meant you had to starve to strive, barring the few exceptions where one becomes popular enough to make a fortune of their creations?
Damn, now that's a shame, wish i had known before

Honestly I'm reading this and it seems like a fever dream, but then I'll have to say that reading La Galatea and reading Don Quixote, you cannot say that the prose in La Galatea is any worse than in Don Quixote, of course you'd have to read it in spanish to understand what I mean but essentially, these two works were clearly written by the same author.
This is an interesting fact though, and if it were true, it proves, without a doubt, that anglos could do well to abandon their language and adopt spanish instead
