Just read "The Final Problem", the Sherlock Holmes short story. What the fuck was this shit? It started with the bad guy already in Holmes' clutches and didn't even explain how he managed to do so, then they both 'died'. It basically went like so: "There's a really, really smart guy after me let's go to Europe." "OK." Then they fell off a cliff. The end.

Did the author have a stroke before finishing the story entirely or something?

Doyle: "Nah I'm going to write other stuff. You die now Holmes."

He just got fed up with writing for the one character over and over, and so killed him as abruptly as possible.

So it was just general laziness?

>> No.1587454

I heard he was getting annoyed with the character or something... Dunno 4 shoor, tho, and too lazy now to research properly, so bampin'.

>> No.1587483

Doyle got pissed at how popular his character had become, so he decided to kill him off just to displease the fans.

Wasn't there a day of mourning for him even? Either way it only suceeded in making Doyle more angry.

Doyle didn't want to write anymore Sherlock Holmes.

He eventually wrote more-- turns out Sherlock faked his death.

Hey remember when Michael Chabon wrote that Sherlock Holmes Holocaust fanfic The Final Solution? Isn't that something a bright ninth-grader would do, not a grown adult who gets published in the Paris Review?

OP should read the Moriarty series by John Gardner.

Conan doyle hated Holmes at this stage, and just wanted him dead. He probably didn't think about much other than getting the cheque.
