Sup /lit/
i recently finished The Great Gatsby and really really enjoyed it, one of my new favourite books as a matter of fact.
Now i understand that this novel is taken to be the 'Great American Novel' and would probably be cited by many, non-americans included, as one of the finest pieces of American literature.
However, what do you guys think about this? What were your thoughts on the novel on the whole? Do you think any novels can challenge The Great Gatsby as the contender for best American novel?

pic related, it's the book, and the edition i picked up

You should read some John O'Hara. He may not say anything more significant than Fitzgerald, and he may tend towards melodrama, but he has a fantastic ear for language

SERIOUSLY WHAT THE FUCK IS IT WITH YOU PEOPL AND THIS FUCKING BOOK. IT'S COOL YEAH, BUT IT'S NOT THE "GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL" BECAUSE IF IT WERE THEN THERE WOULD NOT BE SO MANY GREAT AMERICAN NOVELISTS TRYING TO WRITE THE GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL THEY WOULD JUST SAY

- HEY THAT CUN FITZGERALD, HE NAILED THE MOTHERFUCKER, LET'S STOP WRITING BOOKS AND JUST NAIL CHICKS ALL DAY

WHY THE FUCK ARE THERE ALWAYS FIVE FUCKING GATSBY THREADS ON THIS BOARD (IF YOU INCLUDE THE ONE'S ABOUT THE GAME [WHICH IS BENT, BTW - LIKE JET SET WILLY ON FUCKING MOGADON]).

THE GREAT GATSBY IS A GOOD BOOK - IT'S WELL WORTH READING, BUT IN THE YEARS SINCE THAT BOOK WAS WRITTEN THERE HAVE BEEN MANY OTHER GOOD BOOKS WRITTEN.

NO I AM NOT CAPS GUY I AM JUST FUCKEN MAD, BRAHMANG

Sorry man, but huckleberry finn is the greatest american novel of all time.

Moby Dick is closer to being 'the great american novel' but Gatsby's cool. I love the bit where Wilson's talking about how god's always watching when he means the big advertisement, even if Fitzgerald's being ridiculously ham fisted with his symbols and all. And the last section, from just after Nick's dream, is one of the best bits of writing I've ever read.

this thread was aimed less at the great gatsby as a novel, but more on American literature which can be said to be 'the great American novel' i do, however understand your anger at the threads about this book, but i was looking for recommendations that can be seen to 'challenge' the great gatsby, sorry if i did not make that clear

That's just literature in general though.
Half of it is either shit you heard in college, something you read the review of, or something you read and didn't really think about but since it's so popular you wanted to talk about it and feel smart because you read a smart book.

Everyone does it, including me, even though I imagine lots would say they are secure then they would just read whatever they what and think the same way.

As on the Great Gatsby, it took me awhile to understand the whole money metaphor. I really hated the book before that, but it made it a whole lot more interesting when it isn't some beta new rich pansy playing golf.

Faulkner is an acquired taste. The Bear is all I've read, and I hated it.

Eh, there's entry level Faulkner like everything else. Just because someone has, say, a Finnegans Wake out there doesn't mean there's not a Dubliners.
