Pre-Tolkien. High fantasy. Christian Anglo style petty kingdoms in a completely fictional world. ("Jerusalem", "Babel" etc exist somewhere outside the geography but that's it)

Boy wants to go on an adventure to find the fountain of youth. Takes quite a bit, through other kingdoms, free cities, foreign lands, mountains, forests and deserts. Boy and girl find it, become immortal, go back home and outlive many generations of their children. Not a good ending at all in my opinion but still a very good novel.

The argonautica of Apollonius Rhodius is the OG codification of the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece. If you like the odyssey and want something similar then I think you would enjoy this. I would recommend the Oxford world classics edition :)
