Is physical exercise fundamentally anti-intellectual?

My parents disapprove of me exercising because they believe that cultivation of the body is necessarily a rejection of the mind. They've said that when you're young, you should spend your time reading and finding out new ideas, any time spent obsessing over your physical form will have a negative impact on your studies, not least because it takes away time that would otherwise be spent reading.

Do you think they're right?

Yes, at least about lifting. Larger muscles take more blood away from the brain. You will never see a ripped genius.
Cardio is alright though. You should strive to be as lean as possible and have a good heart so your brain reaches maximum efficiency.

OP, I hope this is bait. Otherwise, I am quite sorry for you.
Physical exercise is beneficial to the body and the brain is part of the body. Even gay bodybuilding (if done without the use of PEDs) will have a positive impact on your health. Yet, what you should tell your parents dancing, boxing or any sport that involves coordination and dexterity have been proven to have a positive effect on the brain because they strengthen the connections between neurons.

I suggest you google Ido Portal. That man is one of the wittiest men that I've ever met And I doubt that he reads much. He is a “professional mover”, a man who has studied many sports and disciplines in order to learn about human movement in itself. Fascinating guy.

my parents are both secondary school teachers, no-one in our family is overweight, everyone eats sensibly and so is fairly healthy.

I guess I find their stance interesting because I struggle to empathise with it, I don't feel comfortable with the idea of not exercising but they do. It made me wonder whether it's a weakness to be reliant on bodily health in order to function well mentally. Ultimately though I agree with a lot thats been written in reply here, it fits with my own experience.

I'll give Ido Portal a look, thanks

Now we know that the mind /body divide does not exist so why should taking care of a part of your being be detrimental for the whole You if done correctly and with moderation?

Your parents don't love you, but they are sort of correct.

The optimal body for a generally good writer is tall and severely anorexic. But they are not happy people. They always kill themselves some way or other. Also there becomes a trust issue between this type and other people, which they can't really communicate with others. They are always talking down from the clouds.

Slim and short people are bitter and evil. I wouldn't trust anybody under 6'0" with anything critical because they are always trying to one up you and get ahead. Selfish insects they are.

Muscles make you exert power outward on others and it makes you happy to do this. Your capability for introspection lessens because of the increased surface area putting a darkness on your body parts and a thick shell. Your mental abilities suffer, but it doesn't matter because you can convince others of anything and look beautiful. This is the optimal way to be.

Being very fat makes you exert bad omens on others, and it makes people morbidly afraid and act evil toward you. You also shadow your inner world with body fat and get brain fog, and smell terrible. You will only be happy when you are stuffing your face. It's the worst way to be, like not really being alive at all. Usually it's the parents that make somebody like this.

The man in the glass isn't necessarily a better judge than those around you. Don't discredit people's judgement and criticism right away; that's not a sign of stoicism (or whatever it is you seem to want to imitate), that's a sign of an egotism that can't bear criticism. Listen to their criticism, weigh it, and judge it, knowing that you will have to live with yourself, not them.

Actually he's right. Yes, the body will produce more blood as a result of the muscles getting bigger, but actually those muscles will also start taking exponentially more blood the bigger they get. In the end the brain becomes starved for blood and even starts to shrivel slightly.

>Do you think they're right?
No; your parents are idiotic.

The health of the spirit, and of the mind, is synergetically contingent on the health of the body, and vice versa; when all three are mutually synchronized in excellence, one moves perfectly, being able to attain to the exalted image of Spirit.

Incidentally: lifting "weights" in incremental manner is pessimal hypertrophic exercise which, beyond producing a surrogate sense of achievement within oneself, and/or a superficial impression within superfluous individuals, only serves to occlude freedom of motion within one's body, thereby, ultimately, and in recursive manner, pessimally effecting one's psykhe; the only aerobic and anaerobic exercises that one needs to practice regularly in order to optimally free, maintain alignment within, and build firmness of, the body, are those of: running, stretching, and corebased strengthening, in that order of importance, and in whatever manner one finds optimal for oneself (martial arts, calisthenics, yoga, etcetera).

Restore the purity, and freedom, of the child body, stop hastening its decay.
