Is the Dark Tower series worth a read?
I'm only asking this because I don't want to invest an enormous amount of time into reading all 7 books only to discover its shit.

Yes. God. Fucking. Yes.
The Dark Tower series, while slow at times, was a fantastic read, from the first lines to the epic scale of the beams (in the books, readthatshit.jpg). That being said, save yourself the trouble, and stop reading after book 6, because 7 will just make you cry and sad that you then realized Stephen King is a fucking twit. Or, if you are into westerns and not much for gonzo-literature takes on plot/character building/time lines, then read the first one, and put the series to rest.
