books about the italian/russian mafia?

really like the feeling of those movies where someone starts from the bottom and get the biggest mafia boss in the town. any books like that?

Not Mafia per se, but damn was GRU lulzy (an organization KGB was scared shitless of).

James Ellroy wrote a lot about the mafia in America. I'm trying to remember certain books, but can't.

One of the best descriptive books about italian mafia is Gomorra, by Roberto Saviano.
Unfortunately (related to your request), it's a non-fiction book, so you won't find a Scarface-like story. Still worth-reading, imho.

That book is really great.

It's real, but it's so well written and the descriptions are so gritty and perceptive.
