Yeah, I can see how his art could be seen as pretentious. The first time I saw some of his stuff I just rolled my eyes and mockingly thought "how deep." I saw his documentary and it changed my mind on him though. I bought his book and decided I liked him. I recommend the movie, especially since its nominated for an oscar this year.

I just mean Kundera in general. There's a Russian camera in there too, I don't see the problem with having a little more Slavic influence. Czech ftw.

This Economist article about Kundera may be interesting for you (or anyone interested in his work). There's a claim that he turned informer while a college student and led to a friend of his being tortured and sent to a labor camp for 14 years. Kundera denies it but archivists say the document listing him as the informer is real.

Many of Kundera's themes deal with guilt and narcissism, or the triumph of self-interest at the expense of self-happiness. Such an episode in his early life may (obviously this is a dangerous and unsupported claim) have influenced his writing.

After learning about the accusations against Kundera I thought of the plight of Tomas from Unbearable Lightness differently. The Russians wanted Tomas to renounce his article. For days he wandered around Prague, looking at his coworkers, wondering if they would look at him differently. I feel like that was Kundera's way of rewriting his own past, wishing he had taken Tomas' route and left for the country somewhere instead of giving in to the enormous Soviet pressures.

>> No.1578119

Not OP, but I'm familiar with the camera. It does use film and does take nice pictures. It's Russian and very tough. It very well may be the type of camera Tereza used in Unbearable Lightness during the fall of Prague. The Flickr group Zenit users can show you the type of pictures the camera will take (http://www.flickr.com/groups/zenitusers/))
