Both are Platopilled and represent a continuation of the Late Classical Platonism of the Eastern Mediterranean under Christian and Muslim guises. But for me, it's Renaissance Platonism, God should be actively strived for like a true Faustian, not passively acquired by Magio-Apollonian withdrawal. Both Hesychasm and Sufism are quietisms.

agreed. Renaissance platonism and early humanism was very evocative. Oration on the dignity of man was one of my favorites.

There's a fantastic line in Bruno's Heroic Furies about the passive contemplative being like an ass that carries a religious icon in a procession.

this.

Both rely heavily on the senses for spiritual experiences. this is very characteristic of spiritualities that have not developed intellectually, which is the case since muslims and orthodox were under constant struggle and had no means of developing schools. They were dominated, muslims by its own different tribes fighting, orthodox by muslims. Not a surprise islamic universities were built in place of considerable peace. Where did orthodox intellectuality develop? In the west, and when Barlaam went to east he saw the errors monks were in. The recent charismatic renewal has its roots in fideistic protestantism, which although they promoted secular teaching they rejected reason, and falls for a similar thing: spiritual experience achieve by the senses.

Henry Corbin and William Chittick are good authors to start the Sufipill. They did make valuable contributions to the Platonic project and it's a shame that their continuation of Greco-Syrian-Egyptian philosophy was snuffed out by Ashari and Hanbali retards.
