because he was an atention seeker to be honest, not a true cynic. i dont know what else would drive a man to show off his poverty so wantanly unless he got some joy at peoples reactions.

His goal was to challenged traditional customs and values and the city was the perfect place for that. In other words, it was his "workplace" as a philosopher. He wouldn't be able to develop his philosophy and exercise it outside of the city.

Sinope was also a city. In this discussion when someone says city, they mean any city that Diogenes lived in

>He was born there
>Except he wasn't Athenian or born in Athens, he was from Sinope
>Sinope was also a city. In this discussion when someone says city, they mean any city that Diogenes lived in

so you somehow know he lived in a city because he was born in one?

being cynic means you care about society because of the people in it and want to change it because it has problems and areas that can be improved

>dislike for them
your confusing misanthropy with cynicism
cynicism is concerned with living in agreement with nature
Diogenes was mocking tradition by doing what he did

this part of cynicism hasn't really gone away if you look at people like Oswald Spenger or John Jacques Rousseau and their critique of civilization
instead of nature ("physis") and custom ("nomos") like in ancient Greek, the people in the western world made the divide between countryside and city (culture vs civilization)
it's pretty much the same ongoing tension in the history of humanity between what man produced as culture by interacting with nature which is mere appearance versus the untouched nature as essence
eventually appearance becomes essence if you believe what Hegel said about humanity merely being nature that has become conscious about itself

That's exactly what he wanted.

Diogenes wanted others, vain & spoiled people who visited the markets and such, to see his lack of material things juxtaposed with his happy, care-free, at-peace ways.

He was very upfront to others about his philosophy. How else could he shock the populace by masturbating in public if he wasn't in the city? His 'attention seeking' made cynicism a long-lasting philosophy.
