Projection, especially Projective Identification, is when you attribute your own properties, behaviors, or thoughts to others.
Transference is when you attribute the properties, behaviors or thoughts of others to others.
The guy who exposes himself to another man and says "haha, you looked, you're such a fag" is projecting his homosexuality.
But "hmm the way you look at my dick reminds me of my girlfriend" that's Transference.
The most common manifestation is a person projects some authority figure, a teacher, a parent, onto the analyst. That's Transference.
