What are some good poetry books/compilations? Trying to get good at it

Depends on your mother tongue

poetry is pretty wide, are you trying to get good at reading or writing it? honestly, the norton anthologies are a good place to start, although marked up due to being taught at unis (get an older edition and itll be cheaper)

Writing it, but i do have trouble understanding it as well. I don’t want any entry level shit though. Thanks for the recommendation

dont worry too much about things being 'entry level' especially when youre a beginner: you likely wont improve if you only read things you hardly understand

Say whatever you will of Bloom, but this one is pretty good.

Honestly, starting with anthologies and theory can be too much of a chore for something that should be rather passionate. I'd suggest you start with any cannonical poet you like and start moving elsewhere til you feel the need of a broader, more general, theoretical and historical understanding of poetry. If I may suggest a book for you, Harold Bloom has a nice and pretty anotated edition of William Blake's poetry; Songs of Innocence & Experience is his best work.

Bookzz has many of them for free ;)
It's just missing the postmodern poetry one. Can't find that shit anywhere other than archive.org

He has some controversial takes, and will never buy into his cannon, although he's a terrific critic and one of the lasts to just appreciate literature as a work of art instead of doing dead, cold academic analysis or making a social study out of them.

Slipping in and out of an ice bath
no warmth, no life without
it’s too much
my arms, my legs are wood
unconscious trees
with roots deep in the ground
we will all be out, soon
an ocean ringed with tile
I know that’s not your style
but it certainly will be mine
If I can’t get this right
so, please
please
please release me
