Not sure if you're just looking for Europe, but if not this one's depressing as all hell and quite moving.

Captain Alatriste is a series of novels set in the 1600s,is about a Spanish mercenary and his protégé during the Flanders War, it is quite entertaining.
It had an adaptation with Viggo as the protagonist, but i recommend to read the novels first

There's some Spanish romances most of which are not translated probably and minor Spanish poets (Góngora, Quevedo, Lope de Vega)
Lazarillo de Tormes
Gargantua and Pantagruel
Don Quixote
Moliere
La Reine Margot (though the film is alright)
The Three Musketeers
The Abyss - Yourcenar
The Dwarf
Urn Burial

L'oeuvre au noir by Yourcenar. It's quite good, maybe you'll like it.

The Island of the Day Before. Not my favorite by Eco, but was a fun read and felt less heady than some of his other stuff.

Lebensbeschreibung des Ritters Götz von Berlichingen. Dont know if its translated to english. Its a pretty based autobiography of the Götz von Berlichingen. The knight with the iron fist.
