I can't vouch for the book in question, but whenever he writes about a subject that I know in depth it's always using the most disingenuous and predictable arguments. Case in point being his essays on the Yugoslav wars and Tibet. The only thing Parenti deserves credit for is sticking to his guns after the Soviet Union collapsed. Chomsky on the other hand I disagree with, but at least I respect his arguments.

Perhaps instead you should post histories which place communist atrocities in their proper context. There are numerous left wing critics of Leninism whose writings, while still fulfilling OP's desires, would also cause him to see these societies in a new light and understand the economic forces behind their emergence.
