"The only truly objective comparison you can make to assess the quality of literature is it's influence on civilisation."

What about religious scriptures?

Perhaps the only reason why they have influenced civilisation (including literature) is because they were enforced so dogmatically by religion which kept the scriptures eternally popular.

But anon, don't you think it argued that the scriptures themselves actually carry the idea of religion, and the perceptions of those who read it and believe it are changed so radically that it's inevitable that it have such an effect on humanity, regardless of the quality of the prose. Same goes for Marx.
