For me, it's hardbacks.
Why on earth would anyone willingly place their ugly and cheap looking paperbacks on display?
Honestly, how embarrassing...

For me, its used second-hand paperbacks with fucked spines. You get the exact same thing for a third of the price and they always have a sense of history to them, especially if you've got one from like the 70s, 60s and even further back than that, which I like. And that one leather-bound I have got cost me £2.50 so yeh the point still stands and that.

I know what you mean. I recently got pic related (Jünger's WW2 diaries, can't be arsed to take a picture) for 12 euros, shipping included, and the first volume had a removed wine bottle label in the back with German words unknown to the original French owner written on it.

Its not nice, though, thats the point. Its tacky. Its "nice" in the same way that guys walk around wearing a vest with a t-shirt because vests are "classy". A cheap affectation of taste. If I walk into a house and see a few leather volumes scattered around the shelf, I will probably think that these were books gathered over the years with care, or personal favorites worth the investment. Looking at all those glossy and rainbow spines screams insecurity and posturing.

Ultimately, you're right, there are worse ways to spend money, like F*nkos, god forbid.

Because there's no use in keeping crap you have zero interest in keeping. I have some Hardy boys crap and they look like first editions too. I really don't want to make an Ebay account but I need to find a good way to sell them because someone will probably buy and I don't want to just dump them in the trash if someone would pay for them.

These bindings upset pseuds not only because they're new and lack any visible signs of wear, but because by virtue of being well-crafted hardcovers they're unlikely to accumulate them any time soon. These are very disturbing qualities in books to your average il/lit/erati who yearns to demonstrate nicely creased and cracked "definitely perused and totally not pseud" paperback spines more than he wants to actually read the very pages they hold together. In their eyes, investing in a sturdy, luxurious leather or nicely decorated buckram bindings to please the owner's eye and provide the books with more longevity is antithetical to the one and only reason of owning physical books at all; that is to serve as an achievement display that would quickly and unambiguously communicate to the two drunken girls and three college dudebros who visit their studio apartment once a year just how authentically e/lit/e and genuinely well-read the owner is, whilst definitely not trying to pretend to want to hope to look like it. Plus, the price factor also breaks some typical self-imposed illusions of being a chosen member of some semi-secret class of penniless bohemian intellectuals, engaged in cultural guerilla warfare on the back line of a grand army of philistine en-pee-see bougies, that so many younger members of /pol/-for-smart-people seem to be under. These are quite hilarious idiosyncrasies and I can wholeheartedly recommend skimming through some older shelf threads to find people both accusing someone of buying particular bindings to show off and chastising the others for not having their spines project the required aura of "well-readness" quite strong enough all in a single post.

Check out booklooker.de or ZVAB.com.
The best books you can get, wont get printed anytime soon. You can get perfect vintage condition (just yellowed pages) of Löns work starting at 15€, if you have the patience to scrool through all the listings. Pic related is my edition, cost around 40 euroshekels, but it'S available much cheaper from time to time.

From the titles and the amount of teachers asistance books that library hardly represents inept mountain inbreeds. I would even go so far as to say that one bible is all that you need, when you consider the kind of humans the mennonites or amish produce in comparison to the nihilistic, oikophobic and goal-less consumers public schools create. Homeschooling is about giving your children values and the ability to think by themselves and learn for life. Pubic school is bulimic learning of propaganda and wage slave knowhow, distancing from the authority of the family to that of the state.

There is a reason why on average home schooled individuals surpass publicly schooled ones in lifes succes rates.

Why would you pay for a conversational piece which has nothing to do with yourself? You get skulls to boast about a nice hunt, some trip /out/ or when it's work related. What does it have to do with you as a human? Otherwise it's just being tryhard, hoping that it will make you look extravagant.

word-for-word translation, resulting in a prosaic effect: Lattimore

a mix of prose and poetry in loose dactylic hexameter which retains the spirit of the original work: Fagles

a translation which is very liberal but is beautiful in its own right and is thus considered one of the greatest translations in literary history: Pope

do Pope on the reread so you can get closer to Homer's words on the first one; it will make Pope more gratifying to read.

my personal recommendation for the first read is Fagles for The Iliad. The Odyssey is a weaker effort by him, but still great.

>publisher prints high-quality hardback collector's editions, but only of public domain texts and classics easily available elsewhere
>publisher prints academic texts, reference works, or reprints out of print classics, but only in terrible paperback bindings that will fall apart after a few years
Why the FUCK does this keep happening? The latter type is the biggest offender, I'm sick of seeing annotated editions of books and academic works only being available in shitty paperback form. Pic related, who the fuck thought publishing the first English translation exclusively as a 1000+ page softcover was a good idea? The publishing industry doesn't seem to care whether their products last, except for a niche group of publishers who put out what are essentially vanity products for people with more dollars than sense.
