For me, its used second-hand paperbacks with fucked spines. You get the exact same thing for a third of the price and they always have a sense of history to them, especially if you've got one from like the 70s, 60s and even further back than that, which I like. Its not nice, though, thats the point. Its tacky. Its "nice" in the same way that guys walk around wearing a vest with a t-shirt because vests are "classy". A cheap affectation of taste. If I walk into a house and see a few leather volumes scattered around the shelf, I will probably think that these were books gathered over the years with care, or personal favorites worth the investment. It's super comfy. Even though I'm 25, I've never owned a smartphone before last Christmas. Tried out the kindle app and never looked back. The first book I read on it was Infinite Jest. Finished it by the end of January. It strained my eyes a bit, but I've gotten accustomed to it. I'm super glad I don't have a giant 1000+page book collecting dust.
