Penguin, Oxford or Barnes & Noble?

>> No.15684872

I prefer Oxford, but I have more Penguins since they're most common in my area.
I've never had a paperback B&N book, but I've had their special editions (Alice's Adventures + Looking-Glass, and Lovecraft's Collected Works).

Oxford is inexpensive and anecdotally I've found that their supplementary notes and essays are of better quality.

Oxford in my experience, though sometimes they overdo it with explanatory notes. My Oxford copy of Tarr by Wyndham Lewis has nearly 50 pages of notes, and though it is has plenty of obscure references and multilingual jokes that might justify notes, about half of them are not necessary.

I quite like penguin. Not really for the content but they're quite easy to acquire and I like the uniformity it gives my library. They are tried and true.

Oxford is the best content, Penguins have nicer covers usually if you care about that. I can't get B&Ns in my country very often but I wouldn't want them anyway.

This. If you must get an edition because of notes and critical material, might as well go all in. If you don't really care, do with whichever is cheaper.

they're all fine i think. i have a good number of Penguins b/c they're pretty popular so they just filter into used bookstores and shit eventually. B&N classics are cheap as dirt and they often have sales like bogo or 3for2 which can make them hard to pass up.

I would mostly just be sure you're getting the best translation. On that front Barnes and Noble is always the worst cause they usually just use public domain translations. For English works I'm going to say Oxford out of those three, but like another anon mentioned Norton Critical really is the best scholarly apparatus.

Oxford for better footnotes. Sometimes they even have comments based on the notes of other publishers, Penguin included.
With translations, it depends.
