I have no Idea who this is. I typed his name into google (germany). Among the first listings, there is a blog by the german public tv, calling his book Seorotonin "a badly made satire".

As germany public broadcasting doesn't like the book... may I guess that Michel Houellebecq is slightly right leaning or conservative or has a audience like that?

I personally started with the movie adaptation of Whatever and Platform, which is lewd and entertaining. Whatever is the shortest and have the most prescient observations on the incel question, so maybe start here.
The one I've enjoyed the most is The Map and The Territory desu, it's not as edgy as the other ones and it's a pretty comfy book.
My few friends who have read Houellebecq all agree that The Possibility of an Island is his best, but I haven't read it yet.

>>15677989
Funny, Germans generally love Houellebecq more than French people do. Pic related, one guy has adapted Submission into a play and this was displayed in front of Hamburg's Hauptbahnhof. I can't imagine this happening in France.
>may I guess that Michel Houellebecq is slightly right leaning or conservative or has a audience like that?
Kinda, yes. I'm a leftist but most leftists in France don't like him because he is critiquing "free love", New Left ideology and modernity, which makes them uncomfortable. He is more appreciated by right-wingers generally. Houellebecq himself doesn't seem to care about endorsing any political stuff, he is blasé.

>> No.15678340

Ive only read Atomised and Serotonin but i don't really think it matters that much where you start really. I think you could safely read him in reverse chronological order since hes big on zeitgeist Serotonin felt much more relevant to my life than Atomised especially the parts about the housing market.

I'm not a frog myself so maybe I'm missing some context but I read his correspondence with Bernard-Henri Lévy, who is a member of the liberal old guard from what I've read about him, and it was quite obvious that BHL was almost always looking for topics and questions to prick Houllebecq with, or to verbally trap him in an uncomfortable corner. It felt really dishonest all in all.

Where did you find the movie for whatever? I've been looking for torrents of it, but have only found some other movie called whatever from 1998 (shit film btw, it's some american woman's high school fantasy). I'm not sure to search for it as "Whatever" or "Extension du domaine de la lutte".
Additionally, would you say I should read or watch it first? I bet I could finish reading it quicker than it'd take to torrent and watch it.

How does this support the incel narrative? The data shows ten percent difference between men and women. Not counting lesbians and gays, that means that if there were 100 men and 100 women, all looking for sex, 90 men would get 100 women, and 10 men would get none. This is nothing like "80% of women go to 20% of men and everyone else competes for the bottom 20%" like incels claim.

Houllebecq is best described as a postliberal nihilist. His characters all come up against the inherent miseries of late capitalism, but then find themselves too weak to combat it and surrender to hedonism or suicide, instead. This is EVERY novel he writes.

Calling him conservative outs you as a retard because it completely ignores his endless lamentations regarding both capitalism and nostalgia.

Bernard-Henri Lévy is a disgusting person. I'm bluepilled on the JQ, but I must admit he completely fits the scheming jew stereotype. I will never forgive him for endorsing the invasion of Libya by Sarkozy and parading there as a "fighter for freedom". Not enough pies can be thrown at this men.

>BHL was almost always looking for topics and questions to prick Houllebecq with, or to verbally trap him in an uncomfortable corner. It felt really dishonest all in all.
The problem is that a lot of the French mainstream media elite is all the same. Houellebecq is seen as a edgy weirdo, which is right, but they don't engage with his weirdness very seriously, they often passively-aggressively attack him for his idiosyncrasies kinda like normalfags would bully a Sonicfag.

>>15678471
I don't remember, it was a few years ago, but maybe on rutracker or rarbg.
Definitely search for "Extension du domaine de la lutte", it was a small budget movie for French TV, but Houellebecq said in a blogpost he thought it was a well done adaptation.
>Additionally, would you say I should read or watch it first? I bet I could finish reading it quicker than it'd take to torrent and watch it.
I haven't read it either lol. I'm a lazy reader addicted to social media.
That said, I enjoy Houellebecq because I don't have to put up with 19th-century flourish and that shit, it's very contemporary and his style is plain. Like >>15678340 implied, he captures the zeitgeist of the neoliberal era.
I think Whatever is 100-150 pages long, it's definitely feasible to read it in one or two sittings if you are an astute reader.

He played in some movies, maybe you should get these, The Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq and Near Death Experience are nice. He is a funny guy.

>>15678723
I've just read the beginning of The Possibility of an Island, and it reminded me that Houellebecq is not strictly about incels, but the suffering caused by having Tinder as an enabler of romantic relationships functioning exactly like a marketplace, the fetishization of youth, sex being considered as a purely recreational thing, etc.
One common theme in his books is that he reminds women that old age makes them equally unattractive, much more than men, and that there is nothing they can do about this unless they are Madonna. He is reminding people that if they fall for the meme of "free love" as it stands under current-day neoliberalism, they are going to inevitably suffer from the decay of their own bodies once their prime years are gone. Sex is way better with someone you truly love in any case.
