The 20,000 churches sounds fake, since there are 22.689 parishes in spain and 71.412 religious buildings (the number is well known because they dont have to pay taxes) and the burnt churches were mostly in Aragón, Cataluña and Andalucía during the first six months of war.

The Church only ever supported Franco BECAUSE of the Republicans. Do you think it they were naive? The Church was never under any illusions about what a monster Franco was. I would say the Spanish church was far too complicit with Franco's atrocities during the war. That being said this is the only correct take. The Republic was dead by the spring of 1937 and in the end it was a choice between Stalinists like Juan Negrin and a milquetoast authoritarian like Franco.

I've spent a summer living with a man who's father lived many years in a Francoist prison camp, and even he was nostalgic about a great deal about the man's program. We're not saying Franco was good for Spain, but at the very least he kept the country out of the Second World War. Franco should not be lionized, but the ideology of authoritarian Leninism which took control of the Republic was demonstrably worse.
