>all Americans hate reading Walt Whitman and Herman Melville
>all Austrains hate reading Thomas Bernhard
>all Canadians hate reading Alice Munro and Margaret Atwood
>all Englishman hate reading Chaucer and Shakespeare
>all Frenchmen hate reading Proust and Victor Hugo
>all Irishman hate reading Joyce
>all Russians hate reading Tolstoy and Dostoevsky

Why is any great author's work only appreciated by people not where they're from?

Think back to your highschool class. Did anyone like reading that faggy shit? No.

>>15671136

I've talked with actual French people. Proust is absolute torture for them, and Hugo is regarded as nothing more than pulpy garbage for children.

>All peruvians hate Mario Vargas Llosa
there are many reasons for people hating a writer, specially if for his politics and his presence on culture

>> No.15671285

>>15671109
the answer is obvious you dumb frog: everyone is forced to read these works in highschool, at an age where most people are too stupid to read serious books and get frustrated if they're forced to do it. So then they just hate them for the rest of their life

>> No.15671365

>>15671156
That people don't enjoy reading in highschool is the fault of the schools/ teachers. Has nothing to do with the authors.
And you little story about talking to a few French people doesn't mean or represent anything.

>> No.15671366

It's because you're forced to read it in highschool.

The single thing highschool actually does well is destroying young people's enthusiasm for whatever is on the syllabus.

Weird because I just checked Amazon France's reviews section of Les Misérables and À la recherche du temps perdu and it's filled of positive reviews from French people. The general consensus in the French readership is a positive one, so where are all these haters you speak of?
