I do not agree with the sentiment that the feelings of pleasure and pain are the highest ends of life. Since both pleasure and pain are subordinated to the mind, and much of what is considered to be in either category depends on the individual, his disposition, and his outlook on life.

In theory there is more pain than pleasure in my life, but I still want to live because of the promise of future pleasure. In fact, the toil of everyday life and the progression from weakness to strength is more pleasant than what you can accomplish with that strength. When age makes you decay, then you change your lifestyle accordingly and come to terms with wasting away.

>it would be better if there were nothing
If there were nothing, for whom would it better? You bake the cake but you don't get to eat it, and something being "objectively" better isn't worth the breath it was said with

>there is more pain than pleasure on earth
There are different degrees of pains and pleasures. Satisfied pig vs satisfied Aristotle. If you want to live like a satisfied pig, you'll never make it. It's not hard to satisfy a thinker, on the other hand.

>creating new desires and new distresses
I don't see that as a bad thing

>the agony of the devoured animal is always far greater than the pleasure of the devourer
The devoured animal fuels the devourer, and whatever pleasure the devourer feels while he is fueled is factored in to the pleasure he feels while alleviating his hunger.

Also, it's another "quirky picture" with stereotypically thought-provoking, shower-thought-tier pessimism. It's like something you'd see on a depression subreddit

Why are old philosophers such joyless fucks? I've only become happier the more I've gotten into philosophy.

The mistake people always make when they try to bury their heads in this kind of sad, defeated bullshit is arbitrarily deciding that the pleasure people spend their whole lives chasing is for some reason has less "worth" than pain. A cup of pleasure isn't equal to a cup of pain? There's a lot of pleasures I'd consider worth a great deal of pain, but not a lot of pains I'd consider too great to deter me from seeking sufficient pleasure. I don't even think the people writing this shit believe it, they're just playing word games. It's incredible to me that thinkers who make such clearly unfounded assumptions like this get worshiped for generations.

I think Schopenhauer forgot about the fact that in death suffering also is temporary.
The animal being eaten probably dies pretty soon, and all pain it experienced will be meaningless because it stops existing.
A painful death makes no difference since the outcome is the same: pain-invalidating oblivion.
All the while the predator can enjoy the dead animal for a long time afterwards.

Applying it to humans makes the matter further complicated:
Who experiences greater joy out of these two:
>unintelligent animal being alive doing nothing in particular
>a dozen humans eating said animal
