What am I in for? Does it live up to the hype? Supposedly it's anxiety-inducing, but I highly doubt that. It's just a novel, even if the structure is weird.

its ok. It definitely uses the concept of a book in a interesting/meta way.
You'll probably have to look up interpretations of the book online unless you really want to solve puzzles that are in the text

the only person i've knew who read it was a faggot so i didn't bother with it but i guess that you'll appreaciate it much more if your contempt for literature has been going on for a while

It is cool how it basically can only exist as a physical thing, like, it existing as an object is important.
It gave me the heebiegebbies at times, but then I forgot my place when I was on like upside-down reading through a mirror page 327 and I just gave up on it.

Wasn't there a digital version that used hypertexts or shit like that?

It's a book where to fully appreciate it you have to dedicate the time out of your day to read certain sections. Like you can't stop halfway through the part where you hold it up to a mirror otherwise you lose the effect and the thread of a narrative. Above anything my advice for reading it is to give it the time it deserves. /lit/ has extremely poor reading habits and often I've noticed the criticism stems from this.

Ignoring the aspects of structure and looking at it as a horror-novel (it really isn't but that's how a lot of people see it), I think it lives up to the hype. Books are a terrible format for jump scares, but I think a lot of horror novels now try to emulate movie horror. House of Leaves is just deeply unsettling. Their first journey down the staircase is extraordinarily unsettling. Just for that reason I like the novel, because the atmosphere of deep discomfort and fear is absolutely nailed even though for all it's being a maze there isn't really a minotaur

The story has that "early 2000s" feel to it. I personally couldn't get over it.

Is there?
Please post a link, I'm interested!

I really dislike the Truant sections. They just come off as fake and un-authentic, like a computer trying to write a character with a west coast vernacular. It's a shame because I really like the rest.

It did kick off the wave of creepypasta that was absolutely fucking everywhere during the mid 2000s

One of my favorite reads. A lot of people focus too much on the little puzzles and subtext and end up missing the point.

It's a great novel and is truly unique.

It was okay. It feels gimmicky a lot of the time, but it's interesting enough.

I don't understand this exchange. I'd assume the guy is an adult. Teens don't recall their friends having read this book. It's way past it's hayday too

its a very fun read but nothing like what critics or youtubers say it is like. it isnt even that scary mostly just weird. and if you like secret codes then its the book for you.
