Do you read books on pdfs to save yourself money?

Libgen has some incredible stuff that I would never have read otherwise. Don't feel bad at all about pirating

>> No.15630748

Yeah. If it's not readily available as a free pdf or epub I just lose interest.

>> No.15630753

nah, I print them in my local stationery store for dirt cheap

>> No.15630804

Occasionally
I have a kindle for backpacking/flights and I load it up with pdfs all the time. More often I get textbooks of libgen and print them out chapter by chapter so I can write notes and do the exercises on the page.
Still love the feel of a book, if I ever plan on reading something bigger

Based, if it's not on my bookshelf it's like I never even read it.

I love physical books for so many reasons but damn it's just expensive.
If i would to buy all the books that i wanted to read then it would require me sacrifice a hefty sum of my wealth. Like, ok, some people say the good knowledge is priceless but i still have other commitments.

No, I buy used books to save money. PDFs are for zoomer and I don't want to put knowledge in the hands of tech companies who produce ebook reader.
Wanna read? Just grab a book and read, and for a moment leave electronic devices.

>> No.15630894

Lol, i forgot my local library existed.
It's pretty big but i don't know if they have the good ancient Greece, stoicism books.
Also, 90% of the books are gonna be in Dutch anyway so that loses value.

Scanned books look better in pdf than epub

>> No.15630907

what's the appeal of epubs, much prefer the aesthetic of high quality book scans

Just curious, but how do scanned pdfs perform on kindle? i'm planning to buy one these days, but a lot of the theory i read in college are scans

The kindle has certain features that don’t work with PDFs (dictionary, Wikipedia links, font options, etc.) and every so often the kindle has trouble with the file and I have to close and reopen it, which is all unfortunate

However, having to read a lot of PDFs for school, it was by far the better option than either spending a bunch in printing or reading it off a laptop. The note taking function still works with PDFs too, so it definitely helps when I stumble across a big nonfiction PDF I’d like to read.
Hope that helps

Sometimes you have to run them through a program to get them to load at a reasonable rate especially the ones that look like photos from libgen. I use PDF Shaper and Scan Tailor together.

With pdf is easier to quote and you can even work the text (notes, comments, highlight, etc.)

No. There's a wall in my mind between reading something on an electronic device and reading an actual book. It's not economically wise, but I prefer actual books. Computers, phones, etc, are a massive distraction to me. Burnt out dopamine receptors, I suppose.
That being said, if I come across something insanely rare, I guess I'll have no choice but to read it on PDF.

Yes, but it's also extremely convenient, especially now. Books aren't considered essential, so if you order from Amazon, you're gonna be waiting a lot longer. Even in normal times, I'd rather not wait and I'd rather not pay if I don't have to.
I pretty much only read academic books and articles. Most are exorbitantly priced, depending on the publisher, and a lot of academic books these days are just collections of articles on various subjects, sometimes only tangentially related. Many readers will only need the book for a few chapters, maybe even just one. Sometimes you can buy chapters separately, but they're still exorbitantly priced, as are articles. I'm not paying that shit, and I'm not waiting a week or more to just read one chapter.

more universal. though book scans can look good it is sometimes much easier for the text to automatically convert to a readers format no matter the device

On the contrary, epubs are for normalfags. They appeal to fiction readers who read for the sake of reading and don't need to cite what they read.

>> No.15633798
