I'm legitimately lonely. When I come here and see the anonymous posts stacked on top of each other, it gives me a sense of closeness that is otherwise absent in my life.

because while there is a lot of shitposting (some funny, some cringe or blatantly harmful for all involved) I still believe this to be one of the more free-er places of the internet. Not "free", but freeer than most.

The anonimity and lack of framed-feedback (upboating) has the power of letting people say what they think; of course most will say stupid shit but some posters actually make this place worthwhile

you sometimes get spontaneous perspectives which challenge and inform in unprecedendented ways. othertimes you find references or discover various works/authors which, in a "cohesive" educational background or work environment you did not chance to do so

TL;DR: I subject myself to shitposting and noise in order to find those 10-15 daily posters who actually have something worthwhile to say, all in a rollercoaster/ randomized stream of subjects. So like the whole of the internet but in one place. Beats the others

This, and a few other reasons. Since graduating college, I don't have friends to discuss arts and literature with. When I need book recommendations, I check the charts and /lit/. /Lit/ is also the only place where I can talk about exegesis or Dante's Beatific vision in one thread and call people faggots in another.

But ultimately, I've found that /lit/ will reward you in proportion to the degree that you read and seek to understand the nature of art.

I've been lurking on and off for 6-7 years. Back then, threads about the top 100, shitpost-filled debates about authors, and the worry about what to read next used to fill me with anxiety and uncertainty, would make me feel like a brainlet, would make me feel like this board is trash.

Now that I've read Ulysses, GR, IJ, Moby Dick, et al. and feel more academically confident, it's easy to dismiss all the posts and threads that are blatantly wrong or indicate poor readership. It simply doesn't bother me anymore. When you filter, ignore, and move on, /lit/ becomes a pretty fucking cool little place, and I haven't been able to find another like it.

As a general rule, the more specific your post is, the more valuable the conversation will be. There's something like a 4:1 ratio of asshats to patricians on this board. When you avoid blanket statements and generalizations and instead ask directed questions and cite specific passages, you can start those patrician conversations and maybe receive insight that'll make you just a little wiser.

Ok, rant over. Back to work. Enjoy your quarantine and books bros.

For me it just came in a roundabout way. I’m not incredibly high IQ but probably above average or possibly just stupid enough to delude myself into thinking I’m high IQ. Anyway, as much as I love my friends and family they sometimes bore me to fucking tears. I needed some form of intellectual stimulation. For a few years ardent studying was enough.

I figured if I just piled on the amount that I studied it would quench the thirst. It works for the most part but not having anyone to talk about these things left a hole. Even now I study Japanese, Latin, philosophy and literature everyday and here on this board I can at least vocalize my thoughts on either philosophy or lit. Typing my opinion out helps form it and turn it from something nebulous into something refined. Every now and then I’ll even get a good reply once I get through all the posts calling me a dumbass or a retard.

I just started coming here to scream into the void. To just engage in the things that have been in my head for so long. I was surprised at some of the Anons who helped contribute and gave me a different view on things. Since then, fuck it, it’s home. It genuinely brightens my day when there’s a thread that’s not complete dogshit that piques my interest. I don’t care if it makes me a cringey faggot. i've posted on /lit/ since nearly the beginning and learned about many wonderful things here. now i stick around and try to repay the favour by passing that knowledge along and contributing any new knowledge i can

there is no other place like /lit/ that fosters healthy elitism and a healthy level of self-loathing for being an entry level pleb. normie social hierarchies are ruined either by turning into nepotistic over-administered fuckfests or by being feel-good happyhappy inclusion fun-fairs where you're not allowed to mock dabblers and women or have community standards. /lit/ has many problems but it fundamentally respects excellence and dedication by not denying that hierarchies of merit exist, and that those low in the hierarchy should generally admire and respect those above them.

even 4chan's famously hostile and polemical culture can't diminish the fundamental meritocracy of its elitism, it only strengthens it. normies don't understand this which is why all their groups and institutions suck.

however the board has declined drastically since 2016 and every other thread is now some zoomer waxing philosophical about a youtube video or tweet he saw, so i'm considering leaving

it's mildly amusing to shitpost, which is an easy and anonymous pleasure. I'm also quite lonely even though I have people to talk to. the board isn't very helpful when I actually have a question, but I accepted that long ago. I have come here on and off since about 2012 and while I remember it being a little better back then, it wasn't much better.

Unfortunately I haven't read much by Petrarch and am generally not that well-read in Renaissance lit. But your question got me to pick up Viking's Portable Renaissance Reader and read some Petrarch, Medici, Buonarroti.

Do you have any recommendations?

Literary agents, who are the gatekeepers of the publishing industry, overwhelmingly push for leftist nonsense. Moreover, there is an issue with Jewish nepotism in the industry too.
It is not possible to point to this issue outside of places like 4chan.
I briefly touch on this issue here:
https://youtu.be/OkiqFBH2Qoo
I also have plans to develop a data mining or web scraping algorithm to use on websites like QueryManager and more in order to determine the proportion of literary agents pushing leftist nonsense.

No, I had started reading Petrarch poetry, but decided to wait until I learn some Italian so I can read the original along with a translation.

As for recommendations, most of the major Italian Families liked to flaunt their wealth with the arts during that time, so just go down the rabbit hole, and you will find more than enough. Don't forget Rome and the Vatican either.

It’s my replacement for pol since pol is unbrowseable, and the mods are really slow so I can get away with fucking with you guys before s little while by spamming shit posts.

Also sometimes I suck up knowledge from some of the high iq people that browse.

Don’t get too full of yourselves but generally speaking this is probably the highest iq board.

Self-care. I used to go weekly to a friend’s house, we would talk about books and comics, he would lend me some books then we would get drunk and go out to bars to pull random shit with the boys.
Reading and smoking is linked to fond memories with people I appreciate a lot.
I’ve been practicing box by myself because a couple of friends box and I hope we can spar together when the quarantine is over.
Also, this environment helps me detox from normie social media.

I remember reading in Fahrenheit something along the lines of “you can give people a couple of pop quizzes and superficial “underground” knowledge to make them feel intellectually superior to the average Joe” it’s very far from the actual quote but you get the idea.
I hate that I can’t have a discussion with my family about certain stuff because they will pull some random fact they heard on YouTube or read in some social media post, or maybe talk about some pop artist or movie and think that they’re the beholders of the absolute truth, and then proceed to get very defensive when I try to make conversation about this new book I’m reading or this thing I just learned at work.
And I fucking hate their conspiracy theories about google wanting to know everything about you and get shit thrown at me every time I tell them the way google uses their info. Which I know because I work in fucking advertisement.

Oh shit yes.

It’s funny how a Facebook group can start as a very organized group while on its first 100s keeping the theme consistent and coming up with interesting stuff.
Then a girl post a body shot that barely relates to the group theme and everything goes downhill.
Anonymity frees us from attention whores and their tendency to derail organized communities

To shit on "big brains" and pseuds. Some of the people on this board are actually intelligent but they can't see the forest for the trees and get stuck up their own ass, so as a relatively normal person I point and laugh. And occasionally you get teenagers asking for genuine advice so I try and point them in the right direction.
