War stories, post your faves fictional or otherwise.

I really enjoyed Dispatches, Nam, If I Die in a Combat Zone, A Rumour of War; a lot of vietnam era stuff.

I've read some WWII stories as well but I can't remember them offhand, one was an American officer's account and another was half of Guy Sajer's Forgotten Soldier.

The Things They Carried was good.

Gotta say man. I've seen you around and tried to be nice, supported you a little, said I wanted to read your MW2 fanfic, felt sorry for you when you said your life is sad and lonely and you just sit at home playing videogames and getting high. But you're also a fucking dick sometimes. I don't feel so sorry for you anymore. And I no longer want to read your stories. (I originally thought they were stories involving modern warfare... not Modern Warfare as in Call of Duty Modern Warfare).

FUCK YEAH, WAR AND REMEMBRANCE AND THE WINDS OF WAR BY HERMAN WOUK.

NO ONE GIVES A FUCK WHAT YOU THINK, YOU DO REALISE THIS, RIGHT?

D&E IS A LOT BETTER THAN HE USED TO BE, AT LEAST HE POSTS KICK-ASS THREADS THAT ARE ACTUALLY /LIT/-RELATED.

d&e showed some other trip (arcuid brunestuid?) some of his own fiction over msn. then that trip posted that text on here in response to d&e.

bearing in mind before this d&e had been doing his whole ' i am the best, such an alpha bro irl' stuff it was quite funny to hear stuff like that.

I second this.

>> No.1562752

Ok its pretty much different stuff, but if read the malazan tale of the fallen. Sure its fantasy and got swords and sorcery in it but its still completaly about war.

what fanfic did you write d&e

i hope this isnt capsguy because if so, you havent been around to say that. d&e's posting has been worse lately.

i post more varied threads than d&e. all he posts is theory(mostly with the intention of trolling by being pedantic, squirming in arguments or just 'wiping the floor' with angtsy noobs), 'recommend me book like war story or BEE', image macro stuff and asks for career advice right now. i post threads about novels, my own fiction, kindle stuff and more importantly, generally help out in others threads whenever i can. d&e on the other hand frequently makes snide remarks to poor anons like 'im not here to wipe your arse' etc. he's intentionally a dick. im just trying my best.

I haven't read any war books, but I wanted to start. Any about the current war that have epic battles and descriptions of combat?

Maus.
I don't give a fuck if it's a comic book.

I don't know whether it's good or not so someone who does please correct me, but maybe Generation Kill?

I'd actually like to know of some good modern era books on war myself

THE SHORT TIMERS!!!

I cannot recommend this book enough. It (and it's sequel The Phantom Blooper) was the inspiration for the movie Full Metal Jacket.

However, the writing style is the most amazing thing. It's like if Hunter S. Thompson had gone to Viet Nam instead of staying around America getting stoned.

And the best part? It's available FREE online!
