You can now whisper gay French shit into each other's ears when fucking.

Never tell anyone that you're going to do something. Only tell others, even random strangers on the internet, once you've actually done it. Come back when you can read an elementary school book.

You chose.. French?

What literature do you have in mind?

This, especially people you know. They are cruel and will mock all your good intentions and laugh at them and you if they dont come to fruition.

I don't agree tho. I told all my friends I was going to start learning german from scratch and recently completed the B2 exam

They do it only anonymously though. Granted, it can help one become stronger. When I see someone suffer on the streets, I am less likely to give a helping hand. If it's someone who bullied me, I will probably take pleasure in torturing them myself.

I mean if you promise you're doing something and you don't follow through then you deserve to be mocked lmao

Not OP but maybe Hugo, Dumas, Balzac?

That's a good point, though is really that much lost in translation with someone like Dumas? He seems like he'd be an easy translation. Nevertheless, one would think there would be much in the German language more valuable, but irrelevant, French is a sweet and sincere language historically.

Depends.
>>15620887
Also true. But I'm sure there are French works where something is lost in translation, though I'm not in any way an expert in French literature so I cant judge. Literature shouldnt be the only criteria for learning a language though, you should also take into account the music, the people, the places its spoken, the General cultural factors, how the language sounds and so on (but yes, we are on a lit board so fair enough.)

French is a good sounding language with a rich history, and was also the lingua franca for much of history. For example Friedrich der Große, prussian king, nearly exclusively spoke French, his German was horribly shitty and he thought French Literature had more to offer than German one.

Friedrich der Große also lived before the great German poets and authors. What important German literature even existed before the late 18th century? You had medieval shit like Walter von der Vogelweide and the Nibelungenlied in Middle High German that reads like Beowulf. Then suddenly you had Lessing, Goethe, Schiller, Hölderlin, Novalis etc. all at the same time after Friedrich's death.

Nathan der Weise, Lessings most well known work, was published before Friedrich died. And there was indeed literature before late 18th century: Till Eulenspiegel, Simplicissimus and the original story of Dr. Faustus, on which Goethe based his play. Just because it isnt well known doesnt mean it doesnt exist.
