Ok I want to start reading philosophy, like a few dozen pages per day. Topics that interest me the most are probably esotaricism, stoicism, and Nihilism, but I don't fucking know anything about any of them so here we are. I have a degree but I never took any philosophy courses. Where the fuck do I start? Can I just open up anything written by Nietzsche? Or are there a few key underlying texts that I just MUST read before getting into everything else? What are, say, 10 books that I NEED to read? Please help me stop being retarded, /lit/.

please don't get sucked into prereq mania, read exactly what you want, when you want it. make sure to supplement with .pdfs you can find on google and you'll be fine. don't treat philosophy like a summer reading list

If you are patrician start with the Greeks.
If you want to start cold with philosophy do it with Descartes.

well I'd like to make it a hobby from now on, so I don't mind building up a huge reading list. I just want to give myself the best possible foundation for future learning.

Ok but there were lots of important Greek philosophers, right? Socrates, Aristotle. "Start with the Greeks" is something, but who and what???

Socrates never wrote. Presocratics (philosophers before socrates) are irrelevant for you right now. Just read Plato's Apology, Meno, another random Plato dialogues, and The Republic. Read some Aristotle if you want. Then read Descartes and Hume. Then Kant and Schopenhauer and you can read whatever you want after that
