Is Mary Renault the best historical fiction author?
Any other good lit in the genre?

Doubtful. Ernest Hemingway reigns supreme in that genre.

What's her deal? Does she just wanna fuck Alexander the Great? Why lust after him when you could just write Alcibiades fanfiction?

I really like her, she was obviously got a lot of great inspiration from Frazer and probably Graves too. It's certainly a unique perspective to have in historical fiction. I'd put Graves first with Renault a close second.

I read Last of the Wine a couple weeks ago and loved it. What book of hers should I try next?

I found her two books about Theseus very enjoyable.Really liked how she dealt with some of the mythology, like the centaurs for example.

If you don't mind a more modern setting, read The Charioteer. It's about a wounded WWII soldier in an English hospital. As The Last of Wine, it's very poetic and gay.
