I loved the golden age when I was 20 andI hadnt started reading seriously yet, Id bet that if I read it now I would find it to be a compelling and fun fantasy but that it does little to rise beyond this. Besides the incredible art I think the best thing about that series is its inversion of the hero/villain relationship. Guts and Griffith are maybe my favorite hero/villain pair in any piece of genre fiction Ive come across.
