Mika Waltari - Sinuhe
Aleksis Kivi - Seitsemän Veljestä
(Lönnrot) - Kalevala
Those are the main ones, you can argue about Tove Jansson's ethnicity if you like.

When I hear or read about Finnish bravery against the Ruskies I feel a pit in my stomach as I remember Finnish birthrates are so irreparably low, and that all their sacrifices were in vain. It's gut wrenching shit.

Birthrates aren't permanent. We're in a situation where all the responsible humans feel threatened and tone down on children.

Mika Waltari is great, The Egyptian is without a doubt his best work and the preferred starting point. The Etruscan is also great.

Väinö Linna is another essential writer, The Unknown Soldier (>>15595939) being the preferred starting point. But his magnum opus is Under the North Star trilogy, which is pure kino.

Aleksis Kivi must also be mentioned, I personally didn't care much for his work, but I can't deny the cultural importance of his works, Seven Brothers being his magnum opus.

The Year of the Hare by Arto Paasilinna is one of my favorites, a fun picaresque novel in which a frustrated journalist, after nearly killing a hare with his car abandons his unhappy urban lifestyle and starts a life in the wilderness living off his cash savings, while nursing the hare back to health, adventures and unlikely encounters in the Finnish wilderness ensue.

Kalevala is an obvious one, it's great.

Haihtuvi nuoruus
niinkuin vierivä virta.
Langat jo harmaat
lyö elon kultainen pirta.
Turhaan, oi turhaan
tartun ma hetkehen kiini;
riemua ei suo
rattoisa seura, ei viini.

>tfw the best poets of your country are songwriters

Katu täyttyy askelista
Elämä on kuolemista
Pane käsi käteen ollaan hiljaa
Pyydä minut aamuteelle
Anna vettä kuihtuneelle
Nyt on elokuu ja minä olen viljaa

En ilosta itke en surusta itke, jos itken
Niin itken muuten vaan
Ja muualla oon, ennen kuin huomaatkaan

Häntä rakastin paljon
Sua rakastan joskus enemmän
Ole mulle vähän aikaa hän

Ota minut sinun uniin
Vaikka nousen toisiin juniin
Nyt on lokakuu ja minusta näkee sen
Kun tulen kiinni sinuun
Jumalatkin uskoo minuun
Vaikka itse aina usko en

En ilosta itke en surusta itke, jos itken
Niin itken muuten vaan
Ja muualla oon, ennen kuin huomaatkaan

>Kaikkiaan noin yhdeksänsataa sivua vaativan kokouksen kuvailun tunnetuimpia jaksoja on piipunvalinta, jossa Härkäniemen isäntä kävelee salin perällä olevalle piippuhyllylle ja valitsee sieltä itselleen soveliaimman piipun. Tämän harkinnan sekä siihen liittyvien ja liittymättömien ajatuskulkujen kuvailuun teoksessa tarvitaan noin seitsemänkymmenen sivun verran tekstiä (3. luku).

Waltari wrote dozens upon dozens of books, but you should only ever read one or two. Read any more and you'll find they're all the same.
