that's the kind of thing that someone who never ended up with a bad job would say. Bad jobs are objective facts. Not a question of duties, but when you are trying to run an inventory system for a marijuana management company and the QA guys are literally accessing their supervisors computer to modify your spreadsheets and then trying to point out the changes as a mistake in the meeting(and not even getting fired for it) you start putting out resumes.

Consumer debt is where a lot of the money comes from. Money is simply debt in easily transferable form. We could maybe have a different monetary system but that's what we have had for centuries and is not what is being questioned in the pledge.

Personal moral objections are silly here, either you are critical of fractional reserve banking or you accept it, but in the latter case you don't get to claim that debt is evil.

That's like accepting a democratic system of government and complaining that the people don't vote the way you want.

You can start poking holes in The SWEAT Pledge without even getting up to the level of actual critical thinking. Mere application demonstrates that it doesn't work, you don't even have to rise to the level of analysis. Just coming up with use cases is sufficient to see that it has more holes than swiss cheese.

Provided you can pay it back, go for it. Even with no interest (or negative interest!), you still need to make regular payments on your debt. So if you take out $3 million at 0% with a 30 year term, you'll still have to pay back $100k/year ($8,333/month) until it's paid off.

>debt is perfectly fine as long as it's rationally thought out

The best laid plans of mice and men. You can plan all you want but being in debt in the first place is not a good position to be in no matter how you think you'll be able to pay it off. One poor financial mishap or unfortunate turn of events and you'll be wishing you never took it on. Avoid it where possible - only take it on where absolutely necessary.

consumer debt has been rising since the 1970s-80s to compensate for the failure for wages to rise.
i oversimplify, but ideally: take all the debt consumers have taken out, pump it into corporate and government sector research and capital investment budgets and you'd get a much better return on investment.
i mean as it stands we've got a system that would rather print hundreds of thousands of dollars a pop so people can buy an existing house, rather than printing it to build new houses, even though the shortage of housing in desirable areas means that prices are just going to go up and cycle around again. the incentives are all screwed up.

i don't have a moral objection to debt, but i have a moral objection to controlling it the way we do now. until the 1970s there was more oversight and things were (correctly) structured towards promoting investment in business and government services. much of the fundamentals were the same, but the changes caused by the small difference in degree we've seen over the last few decades have been huge.

Debt is good.

>It's a sign of a society's trust in rule of law.
>It's a sign people believe in a bright future in which you can lend to people and you can expect repayment.
>It's a sign of a societal belief that people can achieve more by enabling people to pool more resources together than any individual would ever be capable of doing alone
>It being widely available means that this power above is not limited just to governments or major corporations, but to the common person
>It improves societal stability and weathers societal crises by providing a means for the common person to access emergency funds for essentials. In previous societies, the alternative is they would've starved, or been crushed underfoot during these times by paranoid upper classes afraid of power crises
>It gives you more choice: Even knowing all this, you can still personally choose to abstain from all this, and you get to reap the benefits of other's availability and participation.

The sign of a society in crisis is one in which debt has dried up and no one wants to lend. Learn to love debt.
