For me it's hardcover.

Paperback easy.
Comfier holding, better grip when I read (I like to lay down and read).

Books with creased spines are more aesthetic anyways

Same here. They hold up better over the long run. Look better on a shelf as well though that is really of secondary or tertiary concern.

>> No.15568061

Hardcovers are usually bigger and take up more shelf space, if I had unlimited space for them I'd probably buy more of them.

Hardcover feels better in my hands and most collectible or cool books I own are hardcover and way more aesthetically pleasing. I'm always proud of my illustrated Compleat Angler or leather bound Lost Horizon. That and I save up for my books knowing that I want a cool version of a book, so price isn't always an issue. Then I read them and they look really nice on my shelves.

depends on size. Big books like picrelated should only be read in hardcover. Shorter books are acceptable in both.

is there even a hardcover version of that translation/edition?

Theoretically I would like hardbacks better, they last longer and they’re more attractive. But right now my main strategy for buying books is secondhand paperbacks to save all the money I can, when I’m not checking stuff out from the library. Maybe one day I’ll buy hardbacks but right now paper is fine by me, I’d rather have more cheaper books than fewer prettier ones.

most publishers use the same translation for every edition they put out.

When I was 11 there was a secondhand bookstore that had two stories full of books stacked like this. I went there to buy some old trade paperbacks, and the lady who owned the store gave me one more for free.

The next time I went with my friends, and I was one of those kids who was fine on his own, but a total dick when with 'the boys', so we went upstairs, and while they stood watch I turned on the tap in the bathroom an locked the door. Then we both left.

We then heard that the entire first floor (all the shelves, books) were ruined by water damage.

Signet uses the same translations as Penguin as far as I know. Buy a Penguin Hardcover. I own their hardcover of Monte Cristo and it's nice and comfy on the hand. The paperback is gonna die in your hands with such a long book.

If money is no issue, hardcover. If it's something to be read over and over again, hardcover. If it's cheap as shit copies of French literature, then paperback, because there's a really cheap (and actually decent) publisher for French paperbacks.
I use an ereader for the most part though, because getting one of those is pretty cheap (in the long run) and then all the free books online makes up for it. If I had more money, and weren't stuck living on a couch, I'd probably get more hardcovers though.

i read mostly on the train or in bed so paperbacks or kindle for me. i like how paperbacks look when they're thrashed as well. i also think they're just cool portable art objects for the masses; i'm crazy about penguin paperbacks from the 60s and 70s and paperbacks tend to have more interesting art in general.

Dude I have quite a few of those isaac asimov brand mail order short story compilations from the 60s. I must say, although hardcover is better, that those vintage scifi paperbacks are tough to beat.
