The book gets a lot of flack mainly because of how long it took to come out. It's not a bad book, per se, but it's not as good as the previous three.

It also gets flack because it's missing a lot of the cast. You get a few great characters, don't get me wrong. But it's missing a lot of them.

Also, it's missing a lot of the forward momentum that the last books had, and it ends on a cliffhanger -- so don't expect anything to get resolved. Just a slew of new problems.

But it's still a good read. I didn't have any problems finishing it, and I rarely had to force myself through any of it. They show you Dorne, which is awesome. And the Iron Islands are pretty intriguing, too.

Just don't expect it to be as great as any of the other books. It's merely average.

And Cersei spirals into shitfuck insanity, as foreshadowed earlier in the series. Watching her transform into a female version of the Mad King is great. It would be unimaginably rad if GRRM had Jaime invade the city, and kill her the same way he killed King Aerys, in Dance.
