Legend of Randidly Ghosthound is the closest you'll get for western xianxia. Since it is western (apocalypse gamelit not!) xianxia.

Somehow manages to not be as shit as it sounds. I'd even call it good, but expect people to shit on that since, well

Alright. No screwing around, which one of these genuinely scared and moved you? So that I may get it. I got scared of Rudolf Rocker(poltical theorist) when he wrote about primitive man and how he saw ghosts and spirits. And throughout my night reading session I felt as if I was being watched. I wanna fell that again.

Asked in the previous thread just before it died so am asking here again.

Is the way of kings as bad as everyone here says? A relative bought me the book quite a while ago and I have been dreading it. For what it is worth I read the first 3 wot books and really did not like them. Thing is, I do not really have any other casual series to read. I am reading Dune and Gene Wolfe but that is not something you can read after a long day to just relax a little and idk. Could anyone here recommend me something more casual but also not garbage?

Also, to those who have read Shadowmarch and MST - how well do the two compare?

Any novel that actually portrays the future like it's going to be instead of what they want it to be?
No aliens will not be the same as us and no aliens will not be huge ants or something.
And no it's not like soldiers will be needed when drones can fight 100x more efficiently.

Clearly special ed class is out early, because horror stories aren't about the monster you dimwitted lice crusted ballsack, they are about the fear and terror we face when we helpless and hopeless to guide ourselves. The monster is just a physical embodiment of that fear. The difference between good horror and bad horror is the same as the difference between American horror movies and Japanese horror movies.
>inb4 weeb
In American horror movies you have the same slightly loud music, silence, false scare and then BOOMING MUSIC AND GORE!!!!

vs

Japanese horror where you see the scary thing and even if you escape, it is still following you, you don't have access to a year 2137 railgun and unlimited bullets for your 40 machine guns.

You want to write fear, not "The big scary monster punched the huge boobie girl in the tummy and her butthole exploded!!"

I'm of the opinion that it is genuinely impossible for a novel to be "scary," unsettling and disturbing sure, but without being able to control fundamental aspects to good (and bad) horror like sounds, visual cues, and most importantly pacing you can never truly achieve something that will make it hard for some people to sleep.
The genre and medium just don't mix that well.

YA means young adult.
Typically that is a demographic of 13-24 or so. Usually that demographic is more women than men. The top end of that fluctuates though, might be only 18 or goes up to 30.

do people enjoy illustrations and maps and other breaks from the text for visual alternatives? i'm writing a book but i like drawing too and i want people to really get integrated. for me personally i like seeing something just as much if not more than i do reading about it even if the text is very engaging and descriptive. would a fantasy book feel more real and alive to you if you could occasionally get the author's direct insight as to how a non-real thing, animal, person, or place looks?

I had maps be a distraction as well as a much needed guide of locations and I had images give more vividity to the world as well as completely break the immersion by not matching either my mental image or the "tone" of the part I was reading.
I'm not a writer nor an artist so i cant' say why those things happened and how to make then happen. I will say this however, even when the cases the books did benefit from images they would not be ruined by not having them. If you are not confidant about your artistic skills or ability to integrate your story with images don't do it.
Or just ignore me because I'm a retard who never wrote a story in his entire life.

You might be half right there. I don't think I've encountered an author that was kicking doors in Iraq/Afganistan, at least as far as US writers go.
Marko Kloos (Terms of Enlistment) served as some rank of NCO in Bundeswehr (do those guys even count as an actual army?).
T. C. McCarthy (The Subterrene War) is a former CIA analyst.
Peter Watts has never served bu he's a hardened Canadian criminal.
I am not sure how far back I should go. John Ringo used to be a paratrooper, for example.
I think the real issue here is that the vast majority of mil sci-fi is just plain awful.

Joe Zieja was a Air Force officer and does a pretty good "military Spaceballs" comedy series. I find this somewhat surprising because officers generally end up writing warhawk technothrillers instead of funny genre fiction.

Elliott Kay was in the Coast Guard and I would rank Poor Man's War as about as good as Terms of Enlistment. Maybe a little better because the plot isn't "humanity gets totally shit on" for the entire series.

Joe Kassabian is former army and is probably more known for his Afghan war memoir (The Hooligans Of Kandahar, described as "stories about soldiers masturbating, drinking heavily, and behaving like saviors of the world with zero regards for the societies they are invading, you may love this book" by somebody who thought they were giving a negative review) but he's got a pulp space opera series.

Jack Campbell is a retired Navy JAG lawyer, under his real name he published a series of legal thrillers literally called "the JAG in Space series" back in the 00s.

I haven't read Planetside yet but Michael Mammay is a former Army officer and it's got good reviews and the premise sounds interesting at least.

Ringo was peacetime cold war IIRC. May have been Grenada but I think he got out before Desert Storm and the GWoT.

>>15574837
Myke Cole was in the Coast Guard but volunteered to go to Iraq to do SF riverine warfare stuff IIRC, bizarrely his stuff is super stereotypical "PFC THROG THINK VIOLENCE ONLY SOLUTION TO LIBS" but IRL he's a raging liberal.

Jordan made the seanchan (and the aiel too for that matter) unrealistically competent. The idea that everyone in the seanchan army is some master strategist on par with the westland's great generals is just plain absurd, as is the idea that an empire can just keep expanding for 1000 years and never once suffer a defeat.

>> No.15583340

>>15583277
I don't think that's quite accurate. The Seanchan suffer several defeats and have a history of fairly frequent rebellions in their homeland. But they're unreasonably resilient, they always bounce back from any setback twice as hard. Even when Semirhage slaughters their entire royal family save one, that barely gives the Seanchan pause.

And their sul'dam/damane system is way too OP. The only apparent downside is their inability to link with each other while the white tower can. But the white tower can't go on the defensive, they can only act in self defense. That's far more limiting.

Also it's not discussed a lot, but the crystal throne is a ter'angreal that evidently brainwashes anybody that goes near it. That's OP as fuck.

>> No.15583368

>>15583277
Also the Aiel get shattered. When Rand tells them the horrible truth of their history, their society is thrown into complete chaos is never recovers from. But when the truth of Sul'dame is revealed, the Seanchan basically just shrug it off. If Aviendha's prophesies come true, the Aiel ultimately end up getting hunted down like wild animals.

From what I remember about their "ever victorious army," they may lose battles but they always win wars.
>The only apparent downside is their inability to link with each other
There's also the fact that they're cutting their potential population of channelers to a fraction of what it could be because women who could learn to channel if taught get recruited as sul'dam instead of learning how to channel.
Of course, that's only a downside if the aes sedai get their shit together and actually recruit as many potential channelers as possible.
>>15583368
>But when the truth of Sul'dame is revealed, the Seanchan basically just shrug it off.
Tuon shrugs it off, but everyone else who learns about it is deeply upset. It only looks like it doesn't affect the seanchan because the information hasn't spread beyond a handful of people.

>Of course, that's only a downside if the aes sedai get their shit together and actually recruit as many potential channelers as possible.
That's true, but consider also that the Seanchan can "recruit" captured aes sedai but the aes sedai cannot effectively do the opposite (since the damane and sul'dam are brainwashed as fuck.)

>Tuon shrugs it off, but everyone else who learns about it is deeply upset. It only looks like it doesn't affect the seanchan because the information hasn't spread beyond a handful of people.
Maybe so, but the aes sedai don't seem to be engaging in an effective propaganda campaign to spread knowledge of it. Also Tuon's dismissal of the matter seems to hold some water; damane must be collared because they would otherwise channel. Sul'dame have the ability to learn, but they don't do it by themselves, so they are not a danger and consequently don't need to be collared. The Seanchan's ideology seems to adapt to this new knowledge well.

I think the real question is the matter of Aviendha's prophesies. She, the Wise Ones and Rand conspire to change the future to avoid that outcome. But if her prophesy works anything like Min's prophetic abilities, any attempt to change the future will fail.

Something that bugs me though is the survival of Mat and Tuon. I think by the metalogic of the series, neither should have survived. Most of the other characters either survive or perish based on the strength of their relationships, particularly but not necessarily with the opposite sex. Those with healthy relationships survive, while those with dysfunctional relationships perish. Beyond individuals, this seems to be the case for the white and black tower divide; since they cannot reconcile they both perish before the Seanchan. But Mat and Tuon's relationship is deeply dysfunctional and both survive.

Expanding on the last idea, here are some examples that come to mind, though there are more:
>Lan and Nynaeve
Love and respect each other deeply. Lan rescues Nynaeve from drowning in a river, and Nynaeve foils Lan's death wish, both survive.
>Moiraine and Thom
Moiraine gives Thom closure for the death of his nephew, and Thom rescues her from the fox/snake freaks, both survive
>Faile and Perrin
Probably contentious since Faile is kind of a bitch, but both clearly love each other. Perrin learns to respect his wife's autonomy, and consequently both survive
>Rand and his harem of anime babes
All seem okay with that arrangement, and all survive. Rand learns to respect the autonomy of women who want to risk their lives for a cause, like Perrin.
>Morgase and Tallanvor
Morgase learns to stop being a sloot I guess, both survive.

Maybe one of the strongest examples:
>Pevara and Androl
Red Ajah and Ashaman, an unlikely pair, come to understand each other, save each other a few times, and consequently survive.

Notable example in the opposite direction:
>Egwene and Gawyn
Fail to trust each other. Gawyn doesn't tell Egwene about the suicidal Seanchan ter'angreal he found because Egwene keeps bitching at him whenever he tries to tell her anything. Consequently both die.
>Siuan and Bryne
Probably should have lived, but both died because they didn't stick together like Min told them to

Questionable examples:
>Elayne and Birgette
I surmise that Birgette 'survives' in a fashion because she proved her heroism yet again when loyally defending Elayne; as consequence of this, Elayne survives. Incidentally Birgette is the coolest.
>Logain
Chooses to rescue civilians instead of seeking more power, is morally redeemed by this and survives. However his Black Tower evidently never reconciles with the White Tower, and ultimately both fall.

Looking for a story. Read it story only once years and years ago in a collection I picked out at random at my local public library, haven't ever forgotten it. I believe the book said the author was Scottish, and that he never published any other work of fiction in his life. Probably written sometime between the mid-70s and early 80s.

Story has absolutely no dialogue and no real characters, but is focused on a Voyager-esque space probe from Earth, tootling slowly around the galaxy, stopping off at a solar system to gather planetary data, radioing a report containing said data back home, recharging its power cells by orbiting the local sun for a while (solar cells? ram scoop? can't remember), then calculating a course to the next system and setting out. It keeps on carrying out this routine for millions and millions of years, incapable of even conceiving that there's very little chance anyone or anything is still alive back on Earth to receive its messages. Eventually, it encounters another probe, of completely alien design, but practically identical methodology and purpose. The probes each calculate that their missions can be more efficiently achieved working together than solo, exchange and relay the data they've gathered so far, and continue on together from there. Gradually, more and more probes are encountered, as the number of surviving unexplored systems dwindles, and a flock of sorts is formed. The story ends with this flock of probes huddling around the last surviving star in the galaxy, storing up as much energy as they can before striking out across the vast lightless gulf towards another, younger galaxy, there to continue their eternal collective purpose.

Mentioned this story to someone in a conversation the other day, they suggested asking here, I saw this thread, so this is where I'm doing it. Anybody got a clue?

I think the only way the Black Tower beats the Seanchan is if they learn to get along with the White Tower. The Black Tower aren't bound by dumb oaths, which is an advantage for them in battle. But they also can't form circles without the cooperation of women. Granted the Seanchan can't form circles either, but still, I think a major theme of the books is that mutual respect between men and women is the key to success.

It may be the case that Logain's epiphany changed the course of destiny and allowed the Black and White towers to unify, but I would have liked to see some more hint of this happening. Some sort of reconciliation between Logain and Cadsuane maybe.

Even then Logain and his men without the white tower is still some of the most powerful channelers alive. If they really do stick with their 'the Black Tower protects' then they might actually evidently unite with the white tower. I think Andol and Pevara would be the key to this since the two were practically made for that purpose.

>> No.15584694

>>15584673
I agree that Andol and Pevara would probably be the key to it. Perhaps their relationship is how Jordan and Sanderson chose to convey the eventual unification of the towers.

As to the raw power of the men, I believe Aviendha's prophesy mentions that they manage to fight well and hold out for a long time, but are eventually worn down by the Seanchan.

So, I'm a fan of Brandon Sanderson's adult novels. Mistborn 1 is one of my favorite books in fact. Anyhow, I'm about a third of the way through The Way of Kings and am just...bored. None of the characters are particularly compelling and all their plot threads aren't really going anywhere. Also, whatever the central conflict of the book is, it doesn't seem to have shown up yet.
