American culture was very different to British, Britain had the densest population in the world at the time, and much of the Army was not only placed overseas, it was also made up of many different nationalities and ethnicities. The closest thing you'll find to segregation involved people living in their own countries, which was generally very mild and also very much Victorian. Not to say racism didn't exist but American racism, the kind you're talking about, was a whole different beast.
