My personal favorite is his vastly anecdotal United States Essays compendium. There was really no one else at work in the latter half of the 20th century as accurate at taking in-person measures of character & temperament--or who took so much pleasure in the strangeness of the writer's condition. His natural disposition was rather more on the Rabelaisian side than he ever admits without a wink, but that's all for the better when it comes to sorting statesmen from character actors on the spectrum of aptitude.
