I'm in the middle. It's quite good, but very long. I think it really might have worked better as the multiple-volume series it was originally intended as, both to break it up some and make it easier to read other stuff in the middle of, and to mirror the multiple concept, multiple perspective series by Archimboldi. Of course there's no reason you can't read it like that anyway.

I'd save it for last if you're just starting out with Bolano's work. Start with The Savage Detectives.

What level of spanish would be required to read this? Im taking an entry level course right now, so Ill need some more time anyway.

>> No.15548679

>>15548665
Probably years and years of spanish lessons and some immersion. Just read it in english

It's not worth reading it in Spanish, you're not really missing much. Read Borges, or Lezama Lima instead in Spanish.

I guess Borges would be more suited for someone with more experience in Spanish, right? Can you rec some good starting literature?

>> No.15549539

>>15549249
If you're starting out, I would recommend reading short classics but in Spanish. Pinnochio, The Little Prince, etc. Borges' stories in Brodie's Report are also easy to read.

It's funny, there's a ton more going on but some of the simplest phrases are the hardest hitting. I've been thinking for days about
"He changed the channel with the remote. A couple of kids boxing. He changed the channel again because he didn't like boxing"

oh amazing
- the length honestly made me fall in love with it
- it's very well written - and super well translated, props to miss wimmer, as was said it isn't hard at all but at the same time you feel like you're reading great prose
and that's just the prose, the story is great too, interesting characters, very good passages, dreams depicted, atrocities depicted ... sure recommended

>>15548485
i don't feel that, but only after having finished the book, which took me long - but i really appreciate its length i think it gives you time to really settle down in the world, and really breathe its air
- i think if it was split in multiple volumes i wouldn't finish it or smth like that, would skip some parts of the 4th book, but it pays off desu

nope and i think this part of the book is brilliant
