>> No.1554834

>>1554820
Under The Dome was not at all a good book, even compared to most of King's other books. It read like a Dan Brown novel, twist after twist after cliffhanger after cliffhanger at such a pace that the reader doesn't have time to reflect on the relative stupidity of the plot.
Plus the characters were incredibly flat; they were more or less caricatures with no depth or complexity. Jim Rennie was evil and mean in every possible way, Barbie was the paragon of virtue, etc.
It was fun to read, but it really does not hold up in hindsight.

1001 arabian nights, burton translation. It's really fucking long. Most all the tales you haven't heard are really bizarre, tribal things with bears that rape maidens and stuff, totally strange and not at all like most of the famous tales. Well worth reading although I doubt you'll want to read the whole thing in one sitting.

On a side note, I used to have wikipedia on my old second-gen ipod; the second I got that thing I barely listened to music anymore.

"A Man in Full" and some of Tom Wolfe's other novels are near 1000 pages. James Michener is also infamous for writing doorstops. Either author is a good writer, and I made it through their books, but I don't think the extra length contributed anything to the story. It's more a sign of the author's logorrhea than anything else.

Shogun by James Clavell

>> No.1555276

I'm gonna say no. If it takes you a thousand pages to say what you want to say, then it's probably not worth saying, or you haven't worked it out properly. The best writers manage to do their work with economy, the reallly big books are basically saying "look at my great big literary cock".

I'd rather have a 200 page Hemingway novel than 1000 pages of Wolfe any day.

And don't get me started on people writing fucking trilogies. Whores and cunts man, whores and cunts.

>> No.1555293

because there are no big ideas allowed in literature

would ulysses or gravity's rainbow really fit into 200 pages? which parts would you edit out, where the authors don't quite have the idea worked out properly?

>> No.1555298

I'd also say In Search of Lost Time.

Some of the good Russian classics are over 1000 pages (depending on the edition of course)

>> No.1555334

>>1555293

I don't think Ulysses is 1000 pages long, to be honest. Big ideas don't always need big format - Raymond Carver or Jorge Borges could pack ideas into short stories that Michener could never express with all the paper in the world.

I'm all for big ideas in literature, but the idea that a big book means big ideas is laughable.

Just out of interest, what is the "big idea" in Ulysses in your opinion?

Each of the three books of the Baroque Cycle clock in at 900+ pages apiece, and I like 'em.

>> No.1555351

Personally, I love lengthy books.

It's like an entire world you immerse yourself into. The more insignificant and mundane the details, the more "fleshed out" it is, for me.

Love Dickens. Love Tolstoy.

I could never read for the "quick fix." Frankly, I'm always sort of sad at the end of a long novel. I wish it'd go on and on, most of the time.
