When you grow up you're supposed to learn, achieve, and experience different things to "become a man" (in the case of most people on this website). Learn how to stand up for yourself, kiss a girl and get laid, how to be disciplined, responsible, and dependable, how to get what you want out of life. Most of these things are supposed to be taught by the father.
If they cannot keep up with their peers and get left behind (usually in middle or high school), as other kids move up they will move further and further down in the social hierarchy until it becomes easier to simply not participate than to try. Regressing back into video games and fantasy is where they feel safe and not challenged by the "popular" kids. Can't lose if you don't play.

It isn't part of the ideal framework of things, it is there as an empirical and not an abstract fact to be strategically siphoned and channeled away, redirected to areas where it can burn itself out or spin its wheels without endangering the overall framework.

All human beings are progressively degraded under this regime but young men are the hardest and most visibly hit by it, because the ethos of the system might as well be "nothing will ever happen ever again," and the young men of any given generation are its "doers," they are the ones who make "things happen." When you take away things and happenings as an abstract aspect of human existence, the primary vehicle of things happening has nowhere to go, and they are the most in need of channeling and redirecting to an area where they will be harmless.

This can be done by neutering them chemically or psychically, through pathologizing and psychologizing their perfectly normal ennui and confusion at having nothing to do. A feminized society will naturally take young men's frustrated desire to stake their claim in life as "toxic" because from the society's perspective it is unnecessary. The world is already perfect, happiness has already been discovered inactivity. The desire to colonize and conquer new spaces has been made redundant and can now be excised from the organism, chemically pared down, either through prescription drugs or by degrading testosterone levels through unhealthy living and eating. Turn health consciousness itself into a masturbatory and effeminate form of preening for maximum efficiency. There is no more health for the sake of fitness for the sake of some goal.

I know the archetype you're referring to and I do get an immature vibe from people like that. They can be hyper and awkward and cringey and I never understood why they take mass-produced corporate media so seriously. I admit, I do kinda judge these people for this. I try to be conscious of egotistical thoughts I have, but I can't help but feel like these people are...I don't know, slaves to something. To corporations, to media, to mainstream bullshit. Like they lack some kind of self-awareness. Like other posters have touched upon, I also get the impression that they immerse themselves in media because it's safe and satisfies their desires.

Everyone's experiences are different and so I can't give reasons for why people are the way they are, but I can notice themes or patterns. Many of them seem to come from sheltered middle class families and didn't have childhoods that challenged then to grow up.

Are these people wrong for being the way they are? Idk. They're cringey for sure and I don't want to be friends with them. But it's their life. If they wanna be funko pop-buying capeshit consuming otakus, then that's their perogative. I judge them for this, but it would disengenuous and egotistical so say I'm wiser for not being like them.

I enjoy some video games and honestly used to watch a few anime (although I would never tell anyone about the latter) that were good. Sure, these things are not literary classics, but some use their mediums well to give intriguing and entertaining stories.

With this being said, I also did this during the week days or lazy weekends, maybe during slow times at summer. I made sure to prioritize my own well being above my recreation; I went to the gym, I drank with my friends, I studied and learned, I kissed girls, and I was generally around the top of my respective schools social hierarchy.

The people that you are referring to are the one's that use this media as escapism. They also make no attempt to better themselves in anyway. Just as they ensure that they are not exposed to higher literature and ideas, as to better their minds, they also refuse to engage in exercise and physical activity, which would likewise better their bodies. This creates a viscous cycle, in which they are downtrodden and generally outcast from society, although I would argue not outright hated. This causes them to form niches of their own and attempt to secede from the established social norms and pecking order. The issue with this however, is that they already have little social worth, so no one really cares or even notices. This, in turn, subconsciously reinforces their need to isolate themselves with other defeated people, and makes it much more difficult for actual change to occur without outside intervention.

With all of this being said, it is equally as pathetic to lock yourself in an Ivory tower. There is still plenty of merit in entertainment, and video games and other mediums can still be engaging. The issue lies in the way in which these people let these things take over their lives, and the cognitive dissonance that comes with their folly.

Not in Canada (when our $ was on parity with US) The teacher thing isn't even important, it's just to give an example of a common job that pulls 100K that isn't "be a doctor or engineer meme" From my experience, every "real" job pays atleast 70k. Maybe the issue is mcwagies focus on hourly wages when real jobs outside of some trades pay salaries. There is a big gap in jobs that pay 23$-34$ an hour or equivalent. And most only reach the low 20s after working for years in min wage.

I really think kids are just totally stuck in their bubble. Same thing that always confused me when people would complain about video games or a PC being too expensive, not too expensive as in not worth it, but too expensive as in they literally could not afford it because they assume everyone makes anywhere close to min wage. This thread shows up periodically on other boards too I assume but it's a good example of how definitions on the internet by nature can't be stable because most people have a general intuitive understanding of what being a manchild or a bugman means but might disagree more or less over the details (playing video games past the age of 13 or 18 or 21, the act of having ever engaged with certain media and not being instantly disgusted or merely continued consumption into post-teenage years). Similarly, would any of you really jump on the fact that OP doesn't explicitly call out manga or VNs or God knows what other madness half of you are grateful to not even be aware of? Good thing this time most of the replies are correct in the assessment that it's primarily them being childish that draws them to certain media, and secondarily that the media they consume makes them childish.
