Doesn't the fact that hundreds of years on and we're still obsessing over it show something pessimistic about the state of development of his main thrust?

All these years and the state of the art for creating in the reader a solid understanding of consciousness is still Hegel's initial attempt with this book?? Sad that this is the pinnacle

It is sad. But you're absolutely right. That's why I'm studying it, so I can write a better one. Planning to lead a /lit/ read together sometime in the future. Unless someone more qualified wants to take the lead. By all means.

I think the problem is everyone before and after just tack on their study of consciousness as an afterthought to their system while it is Hegel's entire focus, and obviously it requires a ton of thought, that most writers never put in.

Despite this I wouldn't overrate Hegel because all philosophy of the mind is likely to be invalidated the more we actually scientifically learn about it in the coming decades.

I suspect Science will never be able to characterize subject and experience

I think we would have figured it out long ago if human experimentation were legal, the required type would indeed be horrific but if you really got down in the weeds of the neural manipulation we could learn what subsets of the brain in conjunction form the sense of subject and self, which is likely tied to animalistic self preservation instincts.

Experience would be harder to crack and require a lot more data and horrible experiments but could probably eventually be broken down.
