Hello guys, here's a few more ebooks I've converted to properly formatted EPUBs.
The backlog is growing, so see below for a list of titles I plan to work on. May bump them according to demand. Right now, I'll probably do José Donoso's The Obscene Bird of Night.

I'm still taking requests to convert PDFs. If it looks interesting (dark or depressive literary fiction preferred) chances will be higher. Link your file and I'll check it.
I guess you can also ask for books in other formats. Just remember to check the usual sources before asking.

I was looking for some Japanese classic mysteries but Edogawara Rampo's stuff is mostly in EPUB already. I thought I'd do the next best thing and found a recent EPUB that had some formatting issues I fixed.

It's like a Sherlock Holmes set in Edo Japan instead of Britain.

Btw, I just read The Bookmark, half of the Memories... short story and skimmed through at least 40 other pages and the only errors I found were a couple of missing apostrophes to indicate possessives (like doctors instead of doctor's).
It's weird you found typos with technical terms because there aren't that many of them and also because I run 3 different proofreading processes and the dictionaries you find in OCR softwares and MS Word would normally not include such specific terms, so they'd automatically show as incorrect spellings and I went over every incorrect word or weird character (I even fixed French accents).
Some of the stranger words are entirely up to the translators and are the same as the original ("invisilification", "temporator", "rej", "hiemsetator", "monadology", "herbariumized", etc).

>Jorge Luis Borges & Adolfo Bioy-Casares - Six Problems for Don Isidro Parodi
This one always seemed a lot of fun for me. It's a sort of parody of Detective serials and part of a series (by a fictitious Honorio Bustos Domecq). Probably recommended for Borges and Umberto Eco fans.
It was translated by Thomas di Giovanni (the one Borges referred to when he said the English versions were better than the originals), who coincidentally wrote a Borges biography a few years ago. I'll upload the second book fairly soon.

Something simple in terms of format would be alright, like the Myth of Sisyphus because it's just a few essays with nothing fancy.
The problem with OCR'ing non fiction is it tends to be pretty complicated with quotes and citations, footnotes, end notes, indices, etc. which require a ton of attention and manual fixing stuff.

On a kindle and I didn't notice any formatting issues at all. Seemed perfect.

It was exactly what I'd want from a Borges mystery effort. I've been reading a lot of Chesterton lately - Father Brown and the Club of Queer Trades - plus a few other golden age British mysteries and you can really see their influence (and likely Nero Wolfe as well) on the authors. Not in the bad sense of being derivative but at the level of absorbing genre features and transmuting them for their own ends, part playfully meta and part straight-faced.

If you like the more self-aware mysteries you should check out The Face on the Cutting-Room Floor. It defies summary but there's a copy on b-ok.cc

Thanks for the rec. The only book that I know can be described as such is probably The New York Trilogy and maybe some parts of The Savage Detectives.
Kobo Abe also has some pretty fucked up post modern mysteries (The Box Man, Secret Rendezvous, The Face of Another),
Here's a retail epub for The Face on the Cutting Room Floor because I don't always trust epub/mobis from b-ok.

Yup. Notes are a pain in the ass and my autism prevents me from not linking them accordingly. I found the ABBYY -> MS Word export sometimes leaves footnotes and you can convert them to End notes (which is the ebook standard). In the worst case scenario you can insert the "number" and copypaste the note itself. Thankfully this takes care of the sequential numbering. ABBYY is fine for the most part but you also have to pay attention to line breaks with dialogs (sometimes it doesn't break them properly) or sentences being moved to a different paragraph. Or space breaks getting deleted, not to mention French accents and the likes (you can add a custom language with just these characters).
Notes and line breaks are the reasons why I don't do very long book because it requires checking page by page and fixing it manually.

Perhaps be careful with the version of ADE you install because the program needs an Internet connection to function so you can't block it. I'm not particularly prissy with pirating but from what I've gathered on several sites, versions above 2.0.1 scan your entire system for epubs and shit which sounds scary.

I don't really know the specifics nor how transparent the file structure is for a PDF file, but the thing with DRM'd PDFs is that they are ""encrypted"" so they cannot be accessed by any PDF reader software unless you have ADE software installed.

Maybe try downloading/copying one of those PDFs to a different computer without ADE installed and running your tool just to be sure you're not triggering their service? Like I said, that shit is pretty insidious.

I could've sworn this was on one of the charts, but whatever. It must have popped up as a Goodreads rec when checking similar books and my brain just blurred the lines. It's Croatian so it should be depressive enough :^)

>Miroslav Krleza - The Return of Philip Latinowicz
Philip Latinowicz is a successful but disillusioned painter who returns to his hometown after an absence of twenty-three years. He hopes that revisiting his roots will inspire him to create the perfect work of art and thereby restore his faith in both art and life. Haunted by his troubled childhood, however, he falls in with shady characters and discovers the emotional, intellectual, and imaginative poverty of his own background.

I'll probably do Fires on the plain next which I've always wanted to read but fuck PDFs. It's about a Jap soldier who goes crazy from starvation during WW2, after the American offensive reaches the Pacific, so it's probably very bleak and violently anti war.

Not sure what you're referring to but it has plenty of footnotes and the textual notes link to the fragments back and forth.

The PDF seems to be from this edition (at least it has the same cover image and it says it's the second Verba Mundi edition).
The pages that are missing are from Part 1, chapter 6. On paper, it would 76-77. It's around 2/3s into the chapter when there's a very long dialog between the characters.

If you could download the PDF https://files.catbox.moe/skfn7d.rar
and compare it to your copy maybe we could do something. On the PDF, the page order is:
(paper / PDF)
75 / 82 of 446
and jumps to
78 / 83 of 446

>Fires on the Plain - Shohei Ooka
This haunting novel explores the complete degradation and isolation of a man by war. Fires on the Plain is set on the island of Leyte in the Philippines during World War II, where the Japanese army is disintegrating under the hammer blows of the American landings. Within this broader disintegration is another, that of a single human being, Private Tamura. The war destroys each of his ties to society, one by one, until Tamura, a sensitive and intelligent man, becomes an outcast.
Nearly losing the will to survive, he hears of a port still in Japanese hands and struggles to walk through the American lines. Unfazed by danger, he welcomes the prospect of dying, but first, he loses his hope, and then his sanity. Lost among his hallucinations, Tamura comes to fancy himself an angel enjoined by God to eat no living thing—but even angels fall.
