But little did the populous know was that the cure, due to some unseen malfunction, causes people to go insane! They no longer have any civilized function over there bodies, and now they attack any human they see! How will those remaining alive survive, and deal with the undead menace. Make it a materialist thing. People are zombified by their obsession with the next cool or fashionable trend, so much so that that they will cannibalize to acquire it. Or the popularity of zombies has led to grand delusion and hysteria, fostering murderous, authentic zombie behavior in average humans. Then you can ask who the real zombie is: the crazed characters, or the reader. Pretty camp, sure, but most zombie stories are anyway.

Bugs are in this families house. Bed bugs. This gets mixed up in this kids hand, and he's beating off all the time, and that fucks up his jizz, which goes into the drinking water.

This is awesome because it hits on three levels:
1. Bed bugs are relevant right now because they're disgusting and everywhere. I'm from LA and a grip of people are getting mixed up with these fucks
2. Feeling bad about jacking off. Resonates with lots of people
3. Drinking water parallels dysentery scares, which is sorta similar to zombiism. Dysentery is a nasty disease (you shit yourself to death and die of dehydration) that kills you generally within 24 hours of infection. You get it at breakfast, you have a stomach flu by lunch, dead by dinner. Pretty fucking real. Read Ghostmap by Steven Johnson for more on that.

A fungus not unlike the kind that infects various insects.

The spores are ingested somehow and the infected, rather than the urge to consume human flesh, are consumed by a need to climb to a high latitude. People flock to the tops of buildings, climb trees and powerlines. And then they just stand there. Eventually the junctions of the vertebrae, the gap where the spine meets the skull split, and mushroom caps bloom. Spores take air, and spread across the cityscapes, across farmland, into the water.

It snows orange powder, and the cycle begins anew.

Once upon a time there was a zombie outbreak casued by a completely new and unusual vector that you've never heard before. Then the army showed up in helicopter gunships and turned them into puree with miniguns. A few stragglers were mopped up by the NRA, or eaten by dogs and bears. Five days after the beginning of the outbreak, any of them that were left basically exploded because of the internal build up of gas caused by decomposition.

The End

Zombie holocaust? Worst. Genre. Ever,

The cause doesn't have to be explained, does it? Maybe it does, if the scientist archetype / cure plotline has to be brought into the story.

Anyhow, I would go for something innocuous but reasonably uncommon. Zombies spread by biting - the actual cause need not be common to everyone.

How about a new kind of anti-wrinkle anti-aging cream for ladies, which looks great, costs hundreds of thousands, and works.... until they die. So the first zombies would be rich ladies.

The plants grow in the brain and make people a mix of plant/human. Can call the story Paramecium. The plant causes people to be zombies. Bites spread the spores. Can even make is so the plant grows out of the head of the zombies and you have to kill both the zombie and the plant.

My point gets across. That's the only thing that matters. This is the point of communication, to be able to converse in a manner that can be understood by who you are conversing with.

The semantics, they do not matter.

FDA approved" harmless" substitute to salt, massively used by McDonald's and KFC to escape heart attack blames.

Unforeseen side-effects appear : hypotrophy of brain regions (shrinking) dictating logic and autonomous stability (balance), giving subjects a zombie-like behaviour.

Also, since blacks are genetically designed to absorb more salt (and trans fat) than white men (African climate forced this onto DNA), they can be elite zombie bosses in your book, since they are bigger (fatter), and even more crazy.

If you use my idea, I demand that a character be a retired French chef that served in the Foreign Legion and that hates fast food restaurants.

Semantics are necessary to argument, and communication, you silly dude. If inconsistent terminology is used, then clear dialogue is impossible. They do matter.

Has no one suggested the "hell is full" one? You know, the usual folk theory that pops up in a lot of zombie horror.

What if the zombies were like the man+, the next stage of humanity? Or angels, if you want to pull a non science reason.

FINE, symbolic logic then.

A^1= is Fiction
B^1= is Realist

∃X(A(X)^B(X))
∃X(A(X)^~B(X))
∴ ∀X(~(A(X)^B(X))
