Non-fiction includes everything from historical narratives to philosophy to economics to self-help to instruction manuals.

It really is a meaningless classification, but the reason it’s made here is because Plato, in The Republic, states that the tragedian plays by Homer corrupts your soul. In his utopia, no one reads them. I think it is the same for the city in Laws, if I’m not mistaken

It's easy to get your books read and/or pages read stats up if you read fiction. Which is a quantitative advantage at least in the neo-Lopezian functional reading paradigm.

There is more room for pure stylistic research. It can be entertaining.

"Fiction" as we understand it in general refers to stories and artifice of creating worlds and ideas that are not real but are put together to form a narrative. The author might have different ideas in mind on what that narrative is meant to present or portray, but more often than not those stories carry a kernel of moral or philosophical argument that the author is trying to bring to the audience through writing. It could also be writing of a humorous or entertaining nature, focused on entertaining the reader with the narrative.

"Non-fiction" refers to everything else that is written and published that is not a narrative-driven and based on made-up story elements, but possess basis in real events or history, or are biographical in nature - this can be anything from a manual on car repair to humorous autobiography of a stand-up comedian.

The only real answer is because you've chosen to. Fiction may teach children empathy, and that's useful, but reading is hardly the only way people gain the skill.

I thought of another reason. Reading fiction with an eye on rhetoric can teach the reader a thing or two about writing other rhetorical genres.

Your desire for reality and truth can be satiated with non-fiction reading, but will it be satisfied? There are books under the modern category of "fiction" that articulates a reality higher than any "non-fiction" book. Of course I am referring to more allegorical works, not harry potter and the like, look to myths and fairy tales for such things. These classical works of fiction can be much more meaningful than initially perceived.

Allegory was considered by Plato to be the highest form of writing, for it's symbolic nature is the most adequate way for language to represent higher realities in a manner able to be absorbed by humans.

Because art is beautiful, not enjoying it is sad, fiction can also give other approaches to important questions, the fiction we read here is not pure escapist genre fiction like your image suggests. Obviously you shouldn’t only read fiction, that’s stupid, you have to read both non-fiction and fiction, but remember that a typical representation of the person who considers themselves “above fiction“ is a stembug like Sam Harris, soulless autists only read nonfiction.

Fictionlets getting mad is the best thing about this image.

They will justify their trash consumption with arguments such as "fiction is more enjoyable", "you can not be satisfied consuming only non-fiction", "I've always consumed information like this so it's ok", "you are missing the art, the flavor!".
Like fat people defending their poison.

Is there not a difference between fiction that is meant purely for entertainment, and fiction that has a message? I'm a newfag but there must be fictional books that are worth reading for the sake of gaining knowledge/enlightenment.
