This book is complete shit. It's nothing but a bunch of poorly written, wandering, ramblings that can barely be construed as having any semblance to a story or message. Edgy hipster garbage.

Is there something I'm missing? Why the fuck to people like this?

How the old-world notion of the 'American Dream' -- and its only real counter-point, the 60's counter-culture movement -- fizzled and died catastrophically; how the city of Las Vegas, in all its self-contained neon insanity, crystallizes this; finally, meeting form with function (and author being who he is), how going on an all-out hallucinogenic nightmare-tour of the city itself is the ONLY applicable way to explore this.

F&L is the height, crash, and postmortem examination of the counter-culture movement in America.

And you're a fucking moron.

He hit a niche market. When I was in high school, me and my friends all thought it was the shit. Some of us grew up, went to college, and got good jobs. We realized it was shit as soon as we stopped making drugs a daily habit. The rest of the crowd either fucked up their lives or became art majors and still maintain that it's a good book. Moral of the story, there's a reason why it's called dope kids.

I was going to rage, then I realized it's somewhat true.

I still think it's a good book, but for those who either miss or don't agree with the point, then you sir are absolutely correct.

Most people do just like it because lol omg he's talking about tripping and Jonny Depp was so great in that movie. But if you look past the drugs or even look for the reason why he felt it should be done on drugs, then you find a man who's just outgrown youth looking back and trying to make sense of the ideas he used to believe in.

The part of it that I agree with you about is that your belief mirrors the story. You see that people either grow up or wasted away the same way that he does. With a little thought, you could at least appreciate that you and the author are standing on different sides of the mirror. He chose to go out with a bang (no pun intended) you decided to just grow up, bite the bitter, and become a more productive member of society.

Drugs are to Fear and Loathing what swords and spears are to a fantasy book. They're important, they're the main agent and consequence of all action...but fucking hell, if you think that's what the book's about, or you need to personally own some to properly enjoy it . . . you've just missed the goddamn point entirely.

Drugs don't make Fear and Loathing good either -- it's Thompson's skillful transposition of his state of mind while using them, and the way he tied that into the general thesis of the book.

I'm a journalism major, and I'm surrounded by people who praise Thompson for his insights into counterculture. However, I agree with OP. Thompson succeeds only in saying counterculture died out and failed because the environment didn't approve of, or couldn't sustain, their lifestyle. So in some ways, it perfectly executes its goal. A shitty book that fails to go anywhere = a shitty movement that fails to do anything.

Seriously, when did hipster become such a catch-all pejorative that its meaning was broad enough to apply to HUNTER FUCKING THOMPSON?

I believe the word you're looking for is 'pretentious'.

Now your use of the word hipster as a DIRECT SUBSTITUTE for the word 'pretentious' -- because, like, hipsters are SO last year? -- is, itself, a little hipster-y.

Just saiyan.

>>a story or message
If you want a book with winners, losers, and instructions to the reader on how to win based on the story as an example, try Aesop's Fables. If that's not hardcore enough for you, try a book of proverbs or an instruction manual. Oh, and there's this franchise where they read out messages for free every sunday, but I forget the name.
