I just can't get over Descartes and his pineal gland stuff. How can you take anything else he says seriously after he says something that insane?

What did he say bro

Virtually every thinker of his day had some farfetched ideas. Newton, Leibniz, Huygens

"There is nothing so absurd that some philosopher has not already said it." This is some old quote by Cicerus.

Philosophers are free thinkers, they think/say crazy shit all the time.

Funny thing is Descartes himself said something to the very same effect in Discourse on method.

You could say the same about every old thinker who ever made falsifiable observations. That includes a lot of scientists too.

I don't know, read that book but I don't remember a lot of it. It was one of the first ones I read in French. So I ended up learning more French than his ideas.

It is understandable why some people frown upon philosophy, but I remember reading some really good things on that book.

>René Descartes believed the human pineal gland to be the "principal seat of the soul".
>The pineal gland produces melatonin, a serotonin-derived hormone which modulates sleep patterns in both circadian and seasonal cycles.
How are these in conflict? The human soul experiencing awakeness and dream and its relation to being aware of itself as something that thinks makes sense in his thinking.

News flash, even generational intellects are wrong frequently. Being smart doesn't mean you're right about every single thing you ever say, it's more about being good at trying. Being wrong is, in a general sense, one of the best ways to learn anyway. If you don't frequently feel stupid or adventurous in the way you think about things, you are intellectually lazy.
